gatos and xorg(dvd choppy playback)

Recently upgraded from slack 10.2 to 11(yesterday) everything went smoothly following the instructions on slack 11 dvd.

I have a problem playing dvd's they don't play from mplayer I get:

"error opening/initializing video_out(-vo)device"

and in xine they play but really choppy. I ran xine-check and everything was good except for:
Code:
[ hint ] Your X server doesn't support YV12 overlays.
         That means xine will have to do color space transformation and scaling
         in software, which is quite CPU intensive. Maybe upgrading your
         X server will help here.
         If you have an ATI card, you'll find accelerated X servers on
         http://www.linuxvideo.org/gatos/
         press <enter> to continue...
I am using a Compaq Evo N600C laptop with an ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY
video card. I went to the gatos website and couldn't find my card under the supported list. I am not sure if gatos driver is what I need though. Is gatos an Xfree86 only thing? Or can it be used with xorg?(I really don't know the difference between xorg/xfree86 except that slack my new distro uses the former and mandrake my first linux distro uses the latter)

Or maybe I need to use a driver from ati's website?

Ok I checked ati's website and from what I can tell(though I may be wrong) my card is not supported by their drivers.

I did find this though:

The GATOS project does not yet redistribute X.org compatible binaries, but compiling against the X.org source tree will work. The GATOS TV-in code has been incorporated into XOrg, but its TV-out code is still only available in the GATOS drivers.

What does "compiling against the X.org source tree" mean? Does this mean
that if I download the gatos driver source I should be able to compile it myself?

I found a binary on gatos website for xorg 6.7.0.

According to Xorg -version I have 6.9.0. Should I try to install it anyway?

Well I went ahead and installed the xorg 6.7.0 binary from gatos after backing up my X11R6 directory. Problem persists.

activating dma on your dvd drive(s) will most likely fix the choppiness in Xine. I found on a default package install of mplayer, a bunch of libraries are missing. Unzip the packages and check the slack- dependences file. You can get all the packages required off the linuxpackages.net website.

There is a command line tool to activate dma on your drives but i forget what it is at the moment. An alternative is to make an /etc/hdparm.conf file and just use this as an example. Here i have two drives which i've got set up.

#hdparm.conf

/dev/hdd{
dma = on
}
/dev/hdc{
dma = on
}
