fuzzy, blurry center of screen with nvidia driver


When I am using the accelerated nvidia driver the center of my screen becomes a little blurry. Not much but enough to give me a headache after a while. The periphery of the screen is crystal clear, and the blurriness is more pronounced the higher the resoultion. This is not a problem when I reboot to windows, which leads me to believe that it is a software problem. Has anyone else encountered this before and how did you deal with it. I am running slackware 9.1 using the latest nvidia driver. I have a GEforce mx card and a generic dell crt 17 inch monitor. Here is my xf86config file

Problems like this are (in my experience) usually caused by incorrect monitor specifications somewhere in the X configuration file, so let's check that out.

From a search for the specifications for the Dell P790 monitor I found the following information:

* Addressable means the monitor will sync up to this mode. However, Dell does not guarantee the image will be sized, shaped and centered correctly.
So your horizontal and vertical scan rates are correct (for a wonder; they're often themselves the problem), but your modelines don't seem to be:

If your monitor will do 1024x768 at 85 Hz, and 1600x1200 @ 60 Hz, then it will do 1280x1024 at some 70+ Hz (not 61), meaning that the lines for 1280x1024, 1152x900 and 1152x864 are all set to the wrong referesh rates as well (either too high or too low for that resolution), and of course the line that sets the 1600x1200 resolution at 70 Hz refresh is flatly wrong (too high, as the specs indicate that the monitor will only do that rez at 60 Hz).

Since your Horizontal and Vertical refresh ranges are correctly set, I would suggest commenting out the modeline lines (by putting a "#" at the beginning of the line so it will be ignored when read) and allowing X and the monitor to work out directly how the monitor works under various resolutions, rather than forcing them to follow flawed instructions.

Otherwise, everything looks OK (except I'm not so familiar with nVidia driver settings, as I have an ATI card), so I think that this will solve the problem without the need for further adjustments.
