Ftp freezes up during transfer

When im trying to upload something to my server, at random points of the transfer it will just freeze. Sometimes it will recover itself and resume, but usually not, and if it does it just freezes again.

I can usually hit cancel and then hit resume and it goes right back at it, but not always.

Any idea what this is? My friend thinks its because the server is on a cable modem, and nothing to do with the server....I hope not.

It is possible that you have a firewall issue, either on your server or with your ISP. FTP is a very strange beast as it initially opens connections on port 21 and then jumps up to random higher ports for transfers. maybe some of those are blocked by your firewall and some are not, or else only some of your traffic is being interpreted correctly as established/related. I'm not sure what the solution is... I'm just giving you something to look into.
You might want to try sftp which is ftp over an ssh connection. The gui ftp client that is bundled with slack (which name escapes me while I'm at work) as well as winscp for windows will make this connection for you. It is much more secure and easier to firewall appropriately.

Check your MTU as well. FTP upload seems to be especially sensitive to having this set too large, with the server on a cable modem this is likely to be a bit less than 1500.
