freezes when leaves Xwindows.

Everytime I change the runlevel from xwindows to 3 again, or use ctrl alt f6 it freezes on a black screen. it also does the same thing when i want to reboot the machine or logout to a different user if i am allready in xwindows. i think it is pretty obvious that it is a video driver issue but im not sure what to do about it. it is just generic linux driver and im still useing the kernel that came with slackware 10.2. i dont know if that makes a difference but i would like to get pointed in the right direction.

thanks

That really sounds like the oldest bug in ATI's FGLRX driver. Some people suggested switching off AGP Fast Writes and even forcing the AGP to 2x to deal with that issue, maybe that can help you.

Disabling AGP Fast writes
Crash when switching to VT
solved with
Code:
Option "AGPMask" "0x00000016"

I had similar issue and use this fix for me it works, YMMV:

Quote:
change: /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc.
you have to add following to the section [X-:*-Core]
TerminateServer=true
