yes... or.. if you're already using slackware, and you want some FreeBSD packages.. move to FreeBSD?? It's an easy move... I love both Slackware and FreeBSD... (and switch between the two often) but I love FreeBSD ports and package management... not to menion speed and stability...
That .tgz ending does get you hoping though, doesn't it. You can try to installpkg them, it won't hurt anything. They just won't install because there is no install script.
What do you mean you won't get OpenOffice??? Apparently you don't use FreeBSD... OO is available in both binary packages or in ports for compilation....
FreeBSD has a larger set of apps than most linux distros with nearly 12,000 programs available under ports...
I'm running FreeBSD 5.3 on my notebook with OpenOffice 1.1, KDE 3.3, Firefox 1.0, and a bunch of current apps... and it works great....
I am using darwinports on my Mac Os X. And I definately love it.
BUT, I don't think it is too much of a hassle to download the source from wherever you want (freebsd for this case). And untar, uncompressed ./configure, make, checkinstall
Even though I use darwinports, I still key in each step commands; port fetch, port extract, port patch , etc. A bit paranoid.
However, what packages do you want to bring over from FreeBSD which is not in Slackware or which Slackware do not have a counterpart?
