Force ALSA to Sound Card

I have an IBM Thinkpad T40 with Slackware-Current installed with defult 2.4.25 kernel. ALSA recognises both my modem and sound card. The problem is that even though I have both the Sound Card and Modem MASTER and PCM settings up, using "aplay" to play a wav file produces no sound. ALSA seems to have placed my modem as sound card 0 and the actual sound card as sound card 1. For some reason I can't help but think the reason I get no sound is because ALSA is trying to output sound to the modem rather then my sound card. Is there a way I can force ALSA to output sound to sound card 1 instead of sound card 0?

Have you used alsamixer yet? If you do, you may be able to tell ALSA which cards to enable and which ones to mute (or vice versa). After you reset your settings, be sure and run
alsactl store

from the command line

Fidling around with Alsamixer settings never got it to work. I ended up compiling a 2.6.3 kernel, removing Slackwares ALSA packages then installing from ALSA source code and only compiling the intel8x0 modules leaving the intel8x0m drivers out of it. My sound works now, but I won't be able to use my internal modem in Linux. (Not that I ever do anyway.)
