fluxbox slit

Trying this wm after long time with kde, can't use the slit.
I've tried putting gkrellm -w &
in the recommended place(s), but nothing shows.
slack10/fluxbox-0.9.12.tar.gz compiled with --enable-slit.

Any suggestions?

open ~/.fluxbox/apps and add this line:

[startup] {gkrellm -w}

then restart fluxbox...and gkrellm will start up in slit for you everytime you start flux..

if you wanna just start gkrellm in the slit, open a run command and type gkrellm -w and it should start for you...

*edit

if you don't have an apps file, just open xterm and on the title bar, right click and choose "remember position" and that will create an apps file for you.

Make sure you unchecked all options in properties tab from general menu
(right click gkrellm > configuration)

It works! Thanks to both.

Is there something like a howto anywhere for the mysterious slit?

detpenguin 02-11-2005 04:15 PM

nothing i'm aware of for a HOWTO...if you open a terminal and type 'info fluxbox' it will fill up with useful tho less-than-exciting facts and uses for flux, including some stuff on the slit, too...

Here's a link to the fluxbox FAQ. Answer #1 is about the slit:
http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/docs/en/faq.php

There is more good documentation on that site, too. :)

I have a question for you. If you do a "ps ax," how many times do you see gkrellm listed?

I see the program listed twice. Also, it seems to me that my X starts up too slowly, and that I must wait too long for gkrellm. (I use startx instead of one of the *DMs and I've also edited my xinitric.fluxbox so that it points to ~/.fluxbox/startup, in the hopes of eliminating what seemed to me like repetitive steps during start up with the startfluxbox file...) Anyway, I'm just wondering if it's normal to have 2 instances of gkrellm running the way I do.

Thanks!

detpenguin 02-11-2005 05:19 PM

checking mine, i also show 2 instances of gkrellm listed....so maybe it's normal? i also show 3 instances of firefox listed, too...i'm not exactly sure what i'm looking at with ps ax, but at least you're not alone in having multiple instances of things.

sybille 02-11-2005 05:37 PM

I'm not 100% certain, but I think that the multiple instances of Firefox have to do with the way the program communicates with its cache. I'd see two seemingly "extra" instances of Firefox in my firewall status window back in the olden days when I used Windows at home (like, that was a couple of months ago...)

Thanks for letting me know that gkrellm is listed twice for you, also. I'm supposing that is "normal" - especially since I haven't enabled the option to allow more than one instance of gkrellm.

Hope you like fluxbox! I'm a big fan. :)

Here's another fluxbox specific site with some interesting howto articles, a wallpaper gallery, and also a fluxbox forum:

i've been addicted to fluxbox for most of my linux life...i'm a die-hard fan...

Checking ps ax, gkrellm is listed twice.

Thanks for urls for fluxbox info. :)
