Well, to fix that problem I did a minimal dropline gnome install. Now from fluxbox I get the gnome terminal working & lookin' good and Nautilus instead of Konqueror...

Any good reason I shouldn't just removepkg /var/log/packages kde* at this point?

I do like to try new things... bwah ha ha

- i've hit an all time high (?low) for incompetence here- I can not find Firefox2.0 on any of my slack11 CDs.

I've checked all the /extra directories but I dont recognize any firefox packages/dirs. I thought I could get it from slackware packages but I keep getting a server timeout error.

Here it is:

http://mirrors.easynews.com/linux/sl...refox-2.0.0.1/

I had to look at that page 3 times to see the mozilla-firefox directory .

As for the KDE issue, if you don't have a shortage of disk space I'd recommend leaving the packages there. Who knows, you may want/need to run some KDE application in the future. It doesn't hurt if they just sit there...

many thanks for the link! FFX2.0 now running. At least on one machine

I'm not sure why, probably something else I've screwed up, but it seems most/many KDE apps have trouble when i run them in fluxbox. i.e. the konsole, kate issues I've seen, and some programs just wont start, even though fluxbox-generate_menu finds them.

??

I also see lots of 'window handler' errors (something like that) when I exit fluxbox. Is that indicative of something not working right? I checked the fluxbox log

Disk space is only at a premium on the P3, my laptops have 80 and 100GB hds, but both have to share space with windows too.

a new problem , perhaps worth a different thread is that in all this upgrading 10.2->11.0 now my DRI seems to have bit the shed (this is only on the P3, NVIDIA box)

Afaik the (official) Nvidia driver doesn't use DRI, so it shouldn't be an issue.

I don't know why your KDE apps give you trouble. I assume you haven't removed any of the kde libs which may be dependencies for the programs you want to run.

When something doesn't launch, it's a good idea to run it from the console and check if it gives any error messages.

Some KDE apps require KDE services to run at the background but this should be irrelevant to the window manager, i.e. these services should be launched (when needed) regardless of the window manager running. I haven't had any issued with my KDE apps on fluxbox.

So, as a first step, try to find error messages in the console.

One more thing: Fluxbox-generate-menu creates those entries by scanning the system for binaries, right, i.e. not by 'guessing'? I just want to make sure that the executable locations specified in that menu are correct.

You know, it's not that hard to write your own fluxbox menu. I always do, because the layout is important.

@Ilgar- thanks for the NVIDIA tip, does that mean then I shouldn't worry about the GLXinfo saying direct rendering is not enabled? 3d performance seems OK too me, but GLXGears seems very low, like 90fps.

As I recall, before I did:

# upgradepkg --install-new slackware/*.tgz

DRI was reported as on, with the NVIDIA driver. Should I re-install the nvidia driver now there is (I think) a new X version on this machine?

I get these type of errors when running KDE apps.

Code:
perry@hrgrv:~$ konsole

  Minor opcode: 0

@H_TeXMeX_H - yes, indeed I saw a thread somewhere here where there were a bunch of posted .fluxbox/menu files and have/do edit my own. Actually I'm pretty much editing all the .fluxbox files I find, or at least checking them out to see what they do..

One thing about editing the .fluxbox styles thats confusing me are the colors, like greyXX where XX is some number (presumably representing a percentage) it seems that only the color grey has this ability? I've tried others (i.e. green20) but it doesn't seem to work. So I read somewhere that they need to be offically recognized xorg colors (which I immediately googled) I found an X11 color chart... But I don't see grayXX's listed here.

Oh well, its not a big deal either way, its fun to play.

Can you post your '/etc/X11/xorg.conf', I think you're using the 'nv' driver instead of the 'nvidia' driver. (I have an nvidia card and that's what I get when using 'nv' driver).

I cant post it right now, but I think I found at least part of the problem:

-I did nvidia-install --uninstall, and a warning about a missing symbolic link.

-I did '# sh nvidia* '
-time it didn't like the fact that my current GCC was 3.Y but my kernel was compiled with 3.X ( X < Y )
- error'ed out of the nvidia configure (actually I opted out of it, because of the preceding error)

So now I am recompiling my kernel with the current gcc and will '# sh nvidia*' after that.

When I did the 10.2->11.0 upgrade it must have removed some nvidia symbolic link (?). I didn't write down the name of the file. But during the nvidia-installer --uninstall I got a warning that some symbolic link was missing, I saw that it was in the X11 path and so assumed that during the upgrade this file was rewritten, minus the symbolic link.

In hindsight maybe I should have just re-established that link to see if all was well. But I will report back after I recompile kernel and reinstall the nvidia driver.

I hate the nvidia installed ... it has messed things up on my computer so many times that I will now only use the 'nv' driver (and wait for nouveau). It's good enough for what I have to do anyway (2D stuff).

well, that seemed to fix it.

Code:
perry@hrgrv:~$ glxinfo | grep dir
direct rendering: Yes
perry@hrgrv:~$ glxgears
5319 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1063.762 FPS
6755 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1350.863 FPS
6749 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1349.634 FPS
6727 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1345.204 FPS
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
perry@hrgrv:~$
Although I am still looking for how to set my 'CC environment variable'
?? I found a webpage and I think the correct way would be:

export CC="3.4.6" ???

I may have not even needed to recompile, because apparently I have no CC environment variable

Code:
perry@hrgrv:~$ env | grep CC
perry@hrgrv:~$
I probably don't really need great 3D either. in fact I only bought this card because the i810/motherboard/whatever wasnt working with X11. But things could be worse, it could be an ATI

But I figure its another learning opportunity for me.

my (new) xorg.conf file, made by nvidia installer.

Hi again,

based on your xorg log I had judged that you were using the nvidia driver without any problems (it appeared to have loaded successfully) but then I checked my installation and I found that glxinfo gives Direct Rendering is on. The DRI module is not needed for the Nvidia drivers and that's why I said it should be fine without it, but your 90 FPS was too low (that's what you'd get with the nv driver). Anyway, you seem to have sorted that out (yes, you should use the same gcc version to compile modules and the kernel, and there was an update to gcc from 10.2 to 11.0). The upgrade may have replaced some files needed by the nvidia driver but the installer never caused a problem on my system.

As for the CC issue, why do you need it? Anything needing a C compiler should be able to detect the gcc version. If you still want to set the variable yourself, you can try using /etc/profile to do that.

I think that the early xorg.log was from before the upgrade. When the NVIDIA was working, then after the upgrade it stopped working. I think its working now so I wont screw around anymore... at least with that part

yeah, I'm not convinced I need it either, but the nvidia installer was swearing to me that the kernel was compiled with 3.X and now gcc > 3.X

It was still doing that AFTER I recompiled my kernel.

Makes no sense to me, because when I:

Code:
perry@hrgrv$ ls /var/log/packages | grep gcc
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2121 2007-02-14 22:02 gcc-objc-3.4.6-i486-1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 92149 2007-02-14 22:02 gcc-java-3.4.6-i486-1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 76355 2007-02-14 22:02 gcc-gnat-3.4.6-i486-1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2138 2007-02-14 22:01 gcc-g77-3.4.6-i486-1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  10100 2007-02-14 22:01 gcc-g++-3.4.6-i486-1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7144 2007-02-14 22:00 gcc-3.4.6-i486-1
perry@hrgrv$
and:

Code:
Linux hrgrv 2.6.19.35007 #2 PREEMPT Sun Feb 11 09:52:53 PST 2007 i686 pentium3 i386 GNU/Linux
bingo! seems I did not correctly upgrade my image line in lilo.conf, it was pointing to an old (pre-upgrade) kernel.. blush...

I just discovered this while typing this post, I'll fix lilo.conf and then try the nvidia installer again to see if its fixed..

edit to come later

<later...> Well it seems that despite my best efforts, my computer is still working. Indeed when the correct kernel was loaded I don't get the error from the nvidia installer anymore...

Anyways, this P3 box seems to be running pretty well now, many thanks to all of you!

I'm off to break something else
