Flashplayer is broken after update

Flashplayer hung after
Tue Jan 8 22:42:01 CST 2008 updates of slackware-current
It crashes both konqueror and firefox.
The flashplayer is the latest - 12/3/2007.
Just by opening a site with flashes like say skype.com nspluginviewer takes 100% of the cpu.
Please say if you need more details.

I could not get a packaged flash plugin to work on current at all, nor with 12 when running dropline gnome. If I download the tarball from Adobe and use their installer however, it works in both cases. (even with current after updating).

Hi there, im not sure if maybe this is the same issue i had... but hey, im going to post my situation!

I had a similar problem a coupple of months/weeks ago (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...itical-591126/).

I was compiling my own Gnome 2.20.2 in my Slackware Machine, so i had to upgrade some libraries in order to build it (Glib, gtk, pango). Since i upgraded GTK+ libraries, my browser (opera) freezed and took 100% of CPU when surfing (for example) Youtube. I had to wait about 20 to 30 seconds for the browser to be responsive again, and the Flash areas were drawn like a grey colored rectangule. Same problem with konqueror! However i didnt had that problem with firefox! Firefox did displayed all flash animations.

After much "googling", i found out what the problem was! Indeed it was Glib/GTK+2 related, there were also reports of OpenOffice "crashing" with GTK+2, but i never experienced that kind of situation :P

Since glib 2.13.x and 2.14.0, any gtk compiled against this version of glib
locks up openoffice.org or flash when used from a KDE environment.

If you scroll down a few answers you can find a workaround-patch

workaround the issue

We use this patch in the Ubuntu GTK package, that makes the non-free flash work
again

The Patch? http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment...96&action=view

I recompiled GTK+ 2.12.x with that patch and Flash is working flawlessly on my machine :D

I also had a thread in the Opera Forum, which also has the Solution to my problem.
http://my.opera.com/community/forums....dml?id=215515

I hope this could help you....

It's definatly the GTK+2.I changed it to gtk+2-2.10.13 from slack 12.0 and nspluginviewer started crashing instead of taking 100% CPU. Ill try finding another version or compiling it.Thanks a lot!!!

That might have a bit to do with how many times we've said don't install Dropline on Slackware-current. Applied against Slackware's stable release of 12.0 with all it's patches, Dropline's build of Firefox runs both the current (9.0.115) and the previous release (9.0.48) of the flashplayer plugin without problems.

Enh... No big deal there. Their installer script is just a bunch of bash code that eventually just copies the libflashplayer.so into it's best guess of where the plugins directory is. ...and that's really all there is do it. One can easily do this manually.

Just for clarity, I never said that I tried to install Dropline on current. After looking at the sentence structure I see how it could be taken that way.

When I said that the flash plugin package wouldn't work AT ALL on current NOR on Slack 12 WITH Dropline installed, these were two different scenarios where it didn't work for me. Current with out Dropline, Slack 12 with Dropline. 9.0.115 (I didn't try .48) did not work on my Slack 12 install after installing Dropline, but did before - it's a minor / non issue really since Adobe's installer worked fine.

Anyhell, glad the OP figured out a solution.

KillerOfGiants 01-10-2008 10:44 AM

No luck finding a working GTK+2 package. I tried the package from slack 12.0 and the dropline. As i said before the package from 12.0 is crashing nspluginviewer and the one from dropline is working exactly as the one from current. Can anyone at least confirm this issue?
Its very annoying.Today i restarted in windows just to watch a youtube video.

Inuit-Uprising 01-10-2008 12:39 PM

The problem with Adobe Flash is..... Adobe Flash. It uses gtk functions whereas Opera and Konqueror use qt. That's why it usually works well with Firefox but will always have problems with Opera and Konqueror.

KillerOfGiants 01-12-2008 10:41 AM

Hello guys,
I still have that annoying problem.Nothing i do seems to fix it.With the gtk+2-2.10.14-i686-1.tgz from develia.org flashplayer crashes and the backtrace is:
