fixing screen resolution

after installing slackware, i ran into the problem of being unable to adjust the screen resolution to my satisfaction (see here) i believe that i have to download some drivers and compile them into the kernel, but i have no idea how to do it.

can someone tell me where to start?

i am using slackware on a dell laptop, neomagic controller... relevant info and specs are in the link above.

thanks in advance.

After googling your machine it appears that the 1024x768 resolution is only available in 65K colours. Set your default depth to 16 in your xorg.conf and the restart X.

the default depth was previously set to 16, where the modes included "1024x768". it still looks as though it's set at 800x600.

i've installed mandrake before, and had the same problem. i can't remember exactly how it was fixed, but it involved selecting a dell screen, something, somewhere...

Oh well, it must be something else.

I take it you have tried /usr/X11/bin/xorgconfig or xorgsetup. If you haven't you might wish to give them a go.

You could also look for your laptop or graphics card on linux laptops.

Otherwise I'm afraid I'm tapped out.
