I was wondering whether slackware 9.0 comes with a firewall and if it does how do you configure it. If it doesn't what is a good firewall to use as a newbie. Thanks for the help.
Check on linuxpackages.net for a package called firestarter. It has a widard that will allow you to set up the built in iptables firewall just by answering some simple questions.
Firestarter is a good graphical firewall, but iptables is built into Slackware 9 (actaully into any distro using a 2.4.x kernel). If you do a little searching around here on iptables, you'll find tons of script examples. Also check out the top post in the Security forum. It has TONS of links to get you started.
I have run into a problem when I try running firestarter
iptables v1.2.7a: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.
I have changed the location of iptables to /usr/sbin in the configuration file as suggested. Can anyone please explain to me what is going wrong. Thanks.
modprobe: Can't locate module ip_tables
iptables v1.2.8: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.
This is what i receive. I should probably mention that I have recompiled the kernel and as it seems now I might have messed something up.

It sounds as if you left out iptables when you compiled your kernel. Go back to your config and check your networking options. Make sure Network Packet Filtering is selected and then there should be a section on Netfilter configuration that lets you select the options you want in iptables.
YMMV, but I've got most of the options in the networking section selected.
I have tried guarddog and i have the same problem. This is not a graphical interface issue. I obviously have something wrong and need to fix it. I just don't know what and where. By the way it displays 1.2.8 since i tried upgrading my iptables. Thanks again for all the help.
Well I was thinking that even if you'd not installed IPTables, Guarddog would use IPChains instead, but maybe you dont have either. Plus FireStarter doesnt work as well for me.
