Unhappy Firefox won't open more than two tabs in Slack 13.0

Hey folks,
Just upgraded to 13.0 with KDE, and Firefox won't connect to any more than two sites at once using tabs. After checking the system log, named complains that only 1024 sockets out of 4096 available have allocated. Has the 13.0 kernel been compiled with a lower MAX_OPEN_FILES than previous versions? Or, is there some other config that I'm missing? I tried switching from the huge kernel to the generic with no evident change. I've also been able to ping the selected sites, so the network is happy, maybe the http protocol is the culprit ? I also get similar results of tabs timing out and not connecting with konqueror. Any sage advice will be most welcome.

tia, ged

t may be some problem with the firefox or the sockets, Try konqueror and try with new window in firefox.
For Slackware 13 is better a fresh install than a update.

When you get the timeout on a tab, what happens if you try to open the same url in another window? Can you open other connections (ftp, irc, ssh, etc) when firefox times out? This will rule out any socket issue. Does it happens will all users on the box. Try starting with a fresh ~/.mozilla directory (rename the current one then start firefox).

This is not necessarily true. I have not done a fresh install since slack 11 and that was because I lost my / drive and didn't have a backup.

I assume that you upgrade from Slackware 12.2. If you upgraded from an earlier version, there is a chance that your system is now messed up and I would suggest a fresh install after you back up your data.

If you upgraded from 12.2, did you remove ~/.kde and purge /tmp before the upgrade?

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply.
1; Fresh install, blew away v 10.2 with a format and changed the fs to ext4.
2: Full KDE install, incl Firefox 3.5.2.
3: Am using Slax 6.1.2 to write this, because I couldn't get anywhere with Slack 13.0. Most frustrating.
4: Sound card is a multi io async beast using the ice_1712 chip. The KDE included with Slackware 10.2 worked beautifully, now I have distortion and continuos static after a sound should have finished playing. I'm starting to think that the new version of KDE is the real culprit. Now, I know that there is a solution out there, a bit tedious.

Hey Patrick, why didn't you give us a choice of which KDE to use ?? Lots of other window managers were included, why not a KNOWN working (really working) version of KDE 3.x.x?

I've been using Slackware since v3.5 (still have boot and root disks stored away) and this release reminds me of a microsloth release. Please don't fall away from the purity of Slackware's past reliability. Please.

I know progress is inevitable, but some of us can,t afford to buy the latest and greatest every time it hatches. I'm still using an AMD Athlon 1Gb processor, also using windoze 2000 pro, still does everything required of it. Now I'll have to go back to Slackware 10.2 because I can't find the 12.2 iso's. When I look on slackware.org, the directories are still there, but all that's left are the description txts and md5 files, the iso images are gone ! Is there a secret pasture for old iso's ?

There are still ISO images here: http://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/ftp.slac...ware-12.2-iso/
Or, if you'd prefer an Australian server: ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/sl...ware-12.2-iso/

And surely (hopefully) elsewhere, though I too find it a bit weird that they are not on ftp.slackware.com.. Last time I looked, they were there, but not now
