Hi - thanks for taking the time to read this. I just did a fresh install of Slackware 11 on a Dell PowerEdge 2550 Server. Just for informational purporse, i had to pass the raid.s parameter to the Kernel, in order for it to recognize my raided scsi disks.

However, when i login and type startx, KDE starts fine. When I click firefox, i get the "hourglass mouse" (or whatever you want to call it), for about 30 seconds, then it goes away.

The same thing happens when i try and start Sea Monkey.

HOWEVER - KONQUERER works.

I did a fresh install of Slackware 11 on a Dell Optiplex GX 280, and everything is fine. (firefox and sea monkey and everything works fine)

I will close by saying that IMHO, Slackware is the finest Linux Distro on the market today. Super stable, reliable, very fast, etc. Kudos to Patrick!!!

Open Konsole and type "firefox". Then tell us what messages you get.

When i go to /usr/bin and type firefox, i get the following output.

erorr while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: Cannot open shared object file - no such file or directory.

I did some research, and i found out that that file is part of the gtk2+1.2.10-i386-3.tgz package that is on the #1 disk of the Slackware install.

I recently installed slackware on another system, with no problems. However - when i was installing it on this server, i got a "fatal error" on a few of the packages when it was installing.

This could be due to the fact that some burned cd's do not work well in certain cd roms, etc. That is a known issue. This issue is beyond the scope of this thread.

However, i went to the Slackware Setup disc #1, and i copied the gtk2+1.2.10.i386-3.tgz file to my server. Since this is a "slackware package" (beacause it ends in .tgz), all i have to do is type
installpkg 2+1.2.10.i386-3.tgz to insatll it.

I have two questions. Where should i install this package to? I copied the .tgz file to /usr/local (for no apparent reason) I installed it there, tried to restart firefox, got the same error. I then rebooted the machine, and tried firefox again, and got the same error.

i tried using pkgtool to see what files were in the package and where they were installed to, but they were installed in lots of different places.

So where shold I install this package? Am i going about this the right way? Or am i way off base here?

You don't have to wqorry about where to install it -pkgtool and the package content take care of that. You can install it from anywhere, CD or any place you put it on the hard drive.

That shared library you are missing is part of gtk+2-2.8.20-i486-1.tgz, not gtk2+1.2.10.i386-3.tgz. Install that one.

Another thing - installpkg does not care where the .tgz file is. You can remove it after installation.

I copied the other gtk package from the slackware install disc (i had to do this on a computer where the cdrom actually read all the content on the disc)

dumped it on an ftp server

pulled it back down to the server using kongurer/ftp

success!
