system randomly freezes.

Im running slack-current with dropline gnome on kernel 2.6.11. This has happened twice now and it happens when amule is downloading, beep media player is playing mp3s and when i click a bookmark from the toolbar in firefox 10.0.1. I also had nautilus open. The mouse cursor still moves but the animated cursor hourglass and kybd numlock stop working. I tired ctrl alt backspace and nothing but when i press the power button the system goes to runlevel 6 and reboots perfectly(acpi)...i dont see it happen but my disks are unmounted properly. This leads me to believe that X is freezing but I dont know for sure what program is causing the problem.
I need help gathering info so I can fix it or submit a bug report to the appropriate person.

Hi I am a firefox ueer also and has a very close similar system yet I have not ventured into the Kernal Upgrade as fear fills my eyes. I use KDE rather than GNU as it is a sleeker and more reasonable XWindow. I took a look at allthe Xwindows using xwmconfig and going through and checking the way weach looked, and KDE by far is the most reasonable. Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i586; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050322 Firefox/1.0+ is my current firefox build. If Firefox has an issue go to MozillaZine A Place to get help and support for Firefox. Otherwise I think maybe it maybe a badly compiled new Kernal. don't really know. One note, are you running Slack 10.1 or 10.0? 10.2 is soon so maybe that will fix the issue, if you ar running 10.0 the I suggest 10.1 as a better and more optimized build. My hopes are 10.2 will have the 2.6.11 Kernal and KDE 3.4 installed. Don't know all the details yet for sure but am going to subscribe to the update plan from slackware.

I installed 10.1 and use swaret to stay -current. It's not a problem with my kernel config, I've done quite a few rebuilds with the 2.4 and 2.6 kernel and know what I'm doing now. Its happens only in firefox occasionallly when I click a hyperlink. I will check the mozilla boards; hopefully they will show more interest.

PS. I dont like all the bloat KDE has. The only "k" app I really like is k3b. Gnome just seems cleaner and more visually appealing.

Be warned I have gotten a lot of flack for posting Linux Questions inthe Builds area for firefox. They are 90% Windows users and don't want anything to do with Linux users.

I think there is a bug for the hyperlinks on the bug reports, and I think it only affects FF 1.0 or even 1.0.1, they may have fixed it it 1.0.2, but as my post says, I use theTrunks, and have had no issues.

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewto...336381#1336381

Look here at a question I posted regarding allusers and the Mozilla information. You will see that all of the Windows users just ignore the posts.

Suggests you look carefully at the BUGS list and then when you see one that affects you click it and vote on it if you are a current bugzilla subscriber then it will let you do it when logging in. If not create an account and then vote.

I found out today that it isnt firefox either. I wish there was a log i could check that would tell me what the hell keeps locking up. The weird thing is, the mouse moves around fine and when I press the power button acpi does a "shutdown -h now".

PS I tried installing the NVIDIA drivers too and they made my system lock up as soon as I got into gnome. now im back to the "nv" drivers and looking forward to more random lockups!~

Ok tries to help as best she can.

If you can, shut down the entire system.
Turn it off and un plug it

Open the case if you can, and if you know how, take out the cards in the slots, and take a fine dust free brush to it. Or a air can that is moisture free (if they really made one) If you get water or moisture in it wait about 6 or 8 hours to let it dry completely.

Plug the cards back onto the slots. Make sure all FANS are connected where they should be and working. Also check the CPU FAN and if it is properly seated. Loose connections or poor connections can make a mess fo things. Dirty connections too.

This should make a considerable difference.

Also make sure that your mouse is properly plugged in. Everything needs to be checked on the hardware side. It can also be somethingwith the 2.6.11 kernel and On that note, I did some more debugging on it, and finds that depreciated items can cause problems and also if there is no SCSI on the system, only enable the emulation unless you have SATA and then suggests you look carefully at that part and read all the helps it has. Can mess things up badly if it is not set right.

OK, I tore her down and found very little dust but cleaned it up anyway. My cards were seated fine. I have a 3com nic in the last pci slot and the wol connector was seated properly. My NV Ti4200 card is fine, fan working. My hard drives seemed a little hot. I have 3 drives in my system, two are in 3.5" rack and 1 is in a 5.25" bay. Both ide connectors were fine. The processor is a slot p3 733eb. It has a stock heatsink but NO fan! To my surprise, the heatsink was cool and I dont think its a problem. It also had a plastic shroud over it so the p/s fan pulls air over it too. The power supply is probably close to being maxed out. It is only a 200w and I have 1 free connector. (possible problem but unlikely) Now the interesting part.... I bought the system from retrobox.com used. Its a HP vectra and has pc800 rdram (rambus). It was advertised as having ECC memory. I took both modules out, one was a kingston and one was the factory HP (both 128mb with heatsinks). I was about to put them back in when I noticed that the HP module said "nonECC". DOH!!! So i throw 'em back in, goto BIOS menu and turn off ECC. (I had ECC w/ scrubbing enabled.) I'm kinda mad because the computer came with that setting enabled and was also advertised as having ECC. I never thought to even check that. Now I'm going to do some memtests. I hope this solves my freezing problems.

Ok yes your feeling are correct the Power Supply. I have a 420W and it is wonderful, 20.00 for an ATX one too.

One extra note, I had a FF crash too. Even TB crashed. Would not load or unload from memory. So did a full format last night and a few tricks and instead of using the kde 3.3.2 now kde 3.4.0 and new profile. I think an Extension I had was making it crash or something I did on the 2.6.11.5 kernel hack.

Memtests ran great; no errors. I booted into slack, started gnome, and went away for a while. When I came back, the screen saver was froze up. ahhhhhh. I hate this shit! I might switch window managers. Maybe its a gnome thing....I dont like kde so I'm gonna try fvwm2 and fluxbox. At this point I'm thinking about going back to freebsd.

firstly, I will say you have a much better processor and video card than I do and the RAM is the same amount, jut mine is pc100.

Maybe on thing I have noticed is that you run 2.6.11.X and has it working. Well today I got it 98% working. Two issues, the console graphics when to 640x480 and looked horrible. But it booted up just like it should (2.6.11.6) and then tried to get on the infternet, well a long long long time ago, someone was running some 2.1 linux or something, I forget what, but linux was the os. He had problems with that too, and mentioned to me that, he had to install the "Tulip" drivers for his NIC. So what did I forget? So had to go back to 2.4.29 working kernel and will try my hand again later but with 2.6.6.

nVidia Cards have problems on the new 2.6.11.X kernel and the fix is the Kernel Hacking 4th selection, un check. This makes it work.

Now for your lockups. Does this always happen in Gnome? GNU>? for me KDE seems to be the best, and KDE .3.4.0 qorks wonderful. I did a custom reinstall of slackware, set it all up, default wm, kde,and then ran the pkgtool, and removed KDE, (Before running startx) and then used the installpkg *.tgz in the Directory I have the KDE 3.4.0 files stored and it installed. Ran the KDE and it started up way different than the3.3.2 did. Maybe you should consider?

Freezing up maybe caused by a driver conflict, display and the new 2.6.11.X Linux. I use Custom Settings so that I don't have to use the nVidia drivers and it runs just fine. Did you have someone show you the colmpile or did you do it yourself?

I just recompiled my kernel. Now it is version 2.6.11.6. I am using the standard nv drivers for my video card. Here is a copy of my config:

Close to what I had, and the issue I guess the the gcc version I have and apparently it is not up to date and caused some serious errors. I had it set pretty good, and looked like it was going to do all that it shoulld and then crash. I had to brek out my Win 98SE Boot Disk and FDisk the drive to totally blank it out. Slack cfdisk did not and it kept coming back and after reinstalling Slack the hidden files, I had not even installed Firefox yet and it was there. Then it locked my out of my own system. Format drive and reinstall. about 3 hours total time. FTPing Firefox and Thunderbird and KDE 3.4.0 files. Then removing th epackages and booting to Gnome and with this, OMG that was painfully slow!! KDE is so much faster.

The 2.6.11.6 Linux is great, I just need some major time and patience to go through it and really figure out all the nuances of it so that I can really make it work just right. One thing I really need for this is a lot of Patience. Good luck on it and hopes yours works better.
