Firefox can't update plugins

Attempting to do so gives the following:

Firefox could not install the file at http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozi...5/whatever.xpi

because: Unexpected installation error
Review the Error Console log for more details.
-203

When I review the error console log I get the following:

Error: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE) [nsIMIMEService.getTypeFromURI]" nsresult: "0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE)" location: "JS frame :: file:///home/josh/.mozilla/firefox/3xogq1ay.default/extensions/%7Be0204bd5-9d31-402b-a99d-a6aa8ffebdca%7D/components/external-app-blocker.js :: anonymous :: line 126" data: no]
Source File: file:///home/josh/.mozilla/firefox/3xogq1ay.default/extensions/%7Be0204bd5-9d31-402b-a99d-a6aa8ffebdca%7D/components/external-app-blocker.js
Line: 126

The specific files will change, but the error is consistent.

I have full read and write permissions, as well as execute permissions for all relevant mozilla files, so what could be the problem?

As regards "full read and write permissions", did you try the take-full-own-control command
[~]$ sudo chown -R josh:josh /home/josh
[sudo] password for josh:
