This is a known bug. You need to navigate to your ./mozilla/firefox/xxxxx.default directory, (where xxxxx could be any combination of letters and numbers) and rename the places.sqlite file to something else. Say places.sqlite.old. Then simply restart FF.

Note that the above applies to FF3 not FF2. They made a change over to sqlite for storing bookmarks, cookies, and other things.

If you wanted to look inside or edit these non-plain-text files ... databases, I recommend the sqlite manager plugin:

How did you delete the bookmarks ?

The .sqlite file holds all your bookmarks, so if you want you can delete it, but make sure you back them up either by saving the .sqlite file or exporting to html.

There is a quirky relationship between places.sqlite and the backup JSON files. Perhaps the following will help:

Firefox Bookmarks

Similar Bookmark Issue

Bumping the thread here since my question is so similar to the original post. Tonight, suddenly, I can neither add nor remove Bookmarks in my Firefox browser. They are changed for the session but then when I reopen FF I'm back to this particular arrangement.

I have gone to my home folder as suggested and renamed places.sqlite , but what happens is that a back-up is made. Then I erase the original, restart FF, and when I check again I find a new places.sqlite has been created. I can't make it go away.

I read the Human Readable link in Woodman's post. A bit much for me at my humble level, and anyway it doesn't really solve my problem...I don't think.

The only significant change made tonight was following a guy's instructions (kejen) on the IRC Freenode channel ##Slackware. He had me run
Code:
X -configure
as root then move the new file created to /etc/X11/xorg.conf -- which was done in an effort to ultimately get my DRI working for a 3d game, which it did.

Anyway, whether related or not, I now have a Firefox that won't save changes to Bookmarks (additive or subtractive) and a game that still doesn't work and keeps crashing X. *sigh*

help?
