Firefox 3.5.5 does not close properly (slackware 13.0 stable)
I've updated firefox to 3.5.5 using the package that is in patches. Most of the times now (I think always but not sure yet) when I close firefox the process still keeps going even though the GUI closes. I found this out because firefox then refuses to run because there is still one process running.
Is there anything obvious known about this? Anyone else seeing this behavior?
I have to say that I am finding KDE quite irritating and clearly not the type of stability we are used with Slackware... I wonder if this is to be blamed on KDE too?
Yeah I've seen firefox do this a few times, I've never seen it do it consistently. Have your tried deleting .mozilla in your home directory? It might be worth a shot. Keep in mind though you will have to re-download any plugins and make sure to backup your bookmarks etc.
If you have gtk-qt-engine removepkg that and see if it works.
Spot on! I had it installed and after removing it firefox no longer hangs.
The best thing is that even without gtk-qt-engine the firefox menu fonts are still small (instead of the huge size they had originally); that was the only reason I installed gtk-qt-engine in the first place...
I don't think you need to get rid of that package: I've had the same behavior on Windows as well. I've always (on Windows and Linux) had to wait 5-10 seconds before relaunching Firefox.

Vik, but this was not 5-10 seconds, it was as long as hours. It will just hang. After removing gtk-qt-engine it never hangs.
I'm using 3.5.5 on 12.2 with the qt-gtk-engine package. Of course, the version of qt-gtk-engine I am using is for qt3 rather than qt4.
I never have seen 3.5.x hang for long periods but going back all the way to the version 0.x days, Firefox will not restart immediately after closing. For whatever reason Firefox takes several seconds to clean its own house and delete the lock file that was created when running.
As you are experincing this problem with 13.0 and I presume the qt4 version of qt-gtk-engine, I suspect a bug in the qt4 version. Possibly a bug report will help improve the situation?
