firefox 3 in slackware 12.1?
 

Can anyone advise me on the cleanest way to install firefox 3 on slackware 12.1?

I could just upgrade to 12.2, but I've spent some time setting up slackware 12.1 to run sweetly on my eee pc 1000h, which involved upgrading some key things beyond even where 12.2 is at, e.g. alsa 1.0.18.

Isn't it just a matter to download a new Firefox from www.firefox.com (firefox-3.0.6.tar.bz2 as I am writing this), unpack it and run it? (firefox-bin)

I think the cleanest way to do this is to make a package out of the binary. This is what the official slackbuild (ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar...ozilla-firefox) does as well. Knowing that a package is actually just a wrapped up binary instead of a compile, just download the package for firefox 3 from the 12.2 tree and install it.

Because there has been a security issue with the firefox package from 12.2, make sure to use the one from the patches directory:

ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar...0.6-i686-1.tgz

You could use a mirror closer to you for better download speeds. Remove the original firefox package from your system:

You can simply install firefox package for slackware 12.2 into slackware 12.1. (AFAIK) It was created from official binary package, so it should work.

Mcnalu, I'm on 12.1 also and I simply downloaded the Firefox 3.0.6 package for 12.2 from Slackware.com. Like the others said, it's just a repackaging of the binary from mozilla and is not compiled to a specific kernel or Slackware version. Have not had a single problem with it.

As suggested, I downloaded this (actually from a mirror)

ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar...0.6-i686-1.tgz

and had a quick look at the package contents, especially the doinst.sh, to make sure there were no surprises, then installed with installpkg.

All plugins, settings, bookmarks etc. are absolutely fine.

BTW The reason I was being so cautious is that I rely heavily on FF for work and am manically busy just now, so wanted to be sure I didn't mess things up.
