Firefox 3.5.4 + AdBlockPlus + FireBug => Jerky Scrolling

All --

I have googled for an answer and have not found a solution ...

And this is not a Slackware problem by any stretch but I wondered if anyone else has noticed that scrolling in Firefox 3.5.4 via the [ArrowKeys] and/or mouse is jerky and lags to the point of being unusable ?

Seamonkey 1.1.8 still works great but I dread the inevitable upgrade to 2.0 because I'm afraid that it will suffer the same issues as Firefox.

I have tried uninstalling all the plugins to no avail ...

I also tried the SmoothScroll Plugin but that did not help.

I have a decent system: Slackware 12.1 on a Sager NP9262 with an Intel Q6700 CPU, NVidia 8800M GTX.

KDE 3.5 and my other apps run great but Firefox 3.5.4 does really stink.

Note that I did install mozilla-firefox-3.0.4-i686-1 from the Slackware 12.2 distribution and I currently have mozilla-firefox-3.0.11-i686-1 in /var/log/packages/

I recently upgraded Firefox to 3.5.4 via the Firefox=>Help=>[Check for Updates] menu option as root.

I figured this would be OK since Firefox is (notoriously) statically linked to the libs it needs but maybe not ?

That did not help either (maybe even made it worse ... hard to say)

Ideas ?

Thanks.

I use Slackware 12.1 and currently Firefox 3.5.4 and find works great for me without any problems at all. I'm sure that with a bit of 'tweaking' of settings that your Firefox installation can be made to work satisfactorily.

Firstly, go to Preferences > Advanced > General and make sure to uncheck 'Use autoscrolling' and check 'Use smooth scrolling. Try that and report back here again.

Bill --

I believe that did it for me.

I'll turn on my plugins and let you know how that goes.

Thanks a ton !

p.s. Scrolling is ***_MUCH_*** better ...

Not quite as smooth as Seamonkey and still jerky on Slashdot but at least Firefox 3.5.4 is usable now !

Thanks you Bill !

I use the 'SlackBuild' from slackware 13 to make my Firefox packages. I just edit to the correct firefox version and of course the very last line to end with '.tgz'. I prefer to do it that way rather than risk the Mozilla upgrade process. That way if anything goes wrong with the new version I can do a 'removepkg' on that one and 'installpkg' the older one.

One more thing I do to make 'full-screen' Flash more crash-resistant is to add the following line to the Firefox script file in the FF installation directory:
Code:
export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libGL.so.1
I insert it after the line which commences with 'moz_libdir=----'.

Bill.

Bill --

I was thinking maybe that using the built-in Firefox Update over the top of the Slackware-12.2 mozilla-firefox-3.0.14-i686-1 package on my Slackware-12.1 System might have left some cruft behind so I thought I would removepkg 3.0.x and installpkg mozilla-firefox-3.5.4-i686-1-kjh.tgz.

Before I do, I'll add the LD_PRELOAD Line to the ~/firefox and rebuild the mozilla-firefox-simple.diff.gz patch.

Thanks Again !
