Anyone else tried Firefox 20 yet? Normally I just download, extract and copy into /usr/lib(64) then change the link in /usr/bin to point to the new one but for some reason 20 runs really slow. Try to view a web page and one image after another slowly makes its way down.

May I ask you why you don't install the Slackware packages from http://slackware.osuosl.org/slackware-14.0/patches/ and/or http://slackware.osuosl.org/slackware64-14.0/patches/ ?

I have been running Firefox 20.0 for about ten days now without issues.

Have you tried the latest-esr instead:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/re.../linux-x86_64/

FF has gone to the dogs. On the PC it's still barely usable but on Android it's completely useless.

Firefox 20.0 is working perfectly here on slack64-current (and on Android 4.2.2 BTW).

Keeping all systems up-to-date from http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/slackware/...ches/packages/, Firefox 20.0 (and SeaMonkey and Thunderbird and all the others) run quick like a bunny, no runs, no drips, no errors.

Bear in mind that the packages are built for Slackware on Slackware from source (if you look at the SlackBuild for mozilla-firefox* on your CD-ROM/DVD you'll see how).

Might be a good idea to try getting the package (what the heck, get all the patches) from the link above or the way I do it:
Might want to remove the directory /usr/lib64/firefox-20.0 before you start, though.

My experience totally differs here, since I upgraded Firefox to version 20.0 using normal updates, it works like champ, the sluggishness is gone.

Works well for me, but I'm working from a fresh installation, and proper slackpkg update.

No problems here on both Slackware ans Salckware64 and in fact seems a bit quicker. FF 20 on the old PIII-900MHz 256MB DRAM is a bit sluggish though....maybe your systems are a bit old ;-)

You may want to run firefox from terminal - and check the output - check your plugins as well. Aside from that htop may show the problem. I always use slackpkg to upgrade. Is there any benefit to doing it the way you do? firefox 20 on slack 14 64 is working great

Firefox 20 on 32 and 64 bit both faster than 19, I did get it through slack current upgrade on both.

Thanks all, I downloaded the package it it works fine. I've always just downloaded straight from Mozilla because I have to download the windows one for the wife and kids.

fwiw I have found that recently firefox or one of its plugins occasionally lags with cpu usage spiking up to 100% on one core. kill-all firefox followed by a restart cures the issue. I have not found a way to trigger the issue at will.

Did you view a pdf with the adobe reader? Thats been a cpu eater for a while, Adobe will hang open and max out a cpu core.
When I upgraded to Slackware 14 I did a clean install so there was no traces of the Adobe plugin and then didn't install it anymore, the Firefox pds viewer, though really slow sometimes, works most of the time. Other than my scanned I can download the pdf and then open in the standalone adobe. My scanners network web page is the only place firefoxes pfd viewer just doesn't work with.

What you could do is configure Firefox to open Okular (if you're running KDE, that is). It's a lot faster, IMO

Okular only opens about 50% of pdf's so it wasn't all that useable.
I've gone back to plugging in my scanner and scanning to a tif anyway, pfd's are just having too manu compatibility issues
