You need to add a user, using the command "adduser". Give the new user a password by running "passwd userid password". Logout of the root account (type "exit" or "logout") and login as the new user, then type "startx". A graphical user environment will load.

Go here http://www.griffintechnology.com/archive/monitor.html to find your monitor refresh rates because you will need them to complete xorgconfig

Type xorgconfig and follow the instructions.

Then type startx once you've finished.

If you want to boot straight into a gui, you need to edit /etc/inittab and change the default number to the one that is for the gui. It's all explained in the file.
