I am using ext4 on the internal hard drive of my computer, XFS on an external USB hard drive, ntfs/ext3 on another
one. On USB keys, either vfat (to exchange with Windows) or ext2 (if the data remains on Linux). I have been satisfied with both ext[3-4] and XFS. I may try JFS on an external drive. One problem using JFS or XFS is that the kernel from
SL (thanks to an upstream vendor that shall not be named) only supports ext3/4, so the XFS formatted drive is only useable with Slackware. Since I am on a 32bit machine, I cannot try ZFS (64 bit only) and since BTRFS is still experimental, I prefer to let it mature before using it.

ntfs on the windows 7
OSX Journaled on the Mac Box
And sometimes xfat

Linux: ext4 atop LVM except for ZFS on one experimental (LFS) system.

Solaris and FreeBSD: ZFS.

EXT4 here.

I have used JFS, BtrFS, and ResierFS in the past. While ReiserFS was good it's really not up to par with EXT4's performance, and JFS acts weird for me. BtrFS is just an unstable mess.

I'd love to see ZFS on Linux as I really like how well ZFS performs on FreeBSD and doesn't have any real issues like other files systems outside of EXT4 have been for me. Too bad GPL and CDDL just can't resolve their differences.

I have been considering ripping ZFSonLinux's sources, patching them to the Slackware kernel, and then rebuilding my LFS with ZFS support, and then building that way.

You say that like it would be an easy thing, as if they could just shake hands and move on as friends. But in both cases, the license was a promise to the contributors to the source code. The only possible terms that could accomplish this would be if one or both projects could move to a dual GPL/CDDL license. In the case of the kernel, I know this isn't possible since some of the contributors cannot be found or are dead. It wouldn't surprise me if ZFS faces the exact situation.

Very true Patrick.

If I'm not entirely mistaken Oracle owns most of the copyright and code on ZFS, and from what I do know, their lawyers aren't going to play nice and change the license to something more GNU/GPL compatible like MIT or BSDL. Would be nice if Oracle did actually do this as both of licenses would open a flood gate of beneficial exchanges between Linux and ZFS having a proper implementation.

However, the ZFSOnLinux project is a nice alternative for a custom built do-it-yourself Linux build. I have some time this weekend so I might give it a shot.

Ext4, simply because my OS's uses this by default, and I don't need anything else.

ext3 because I read somewhere that ext3 is better at recovering from abrupt power loss than ext4.

All the more reason I purchased a UPS unit. When in doubt I can easily shutdown the system before total power failure.

I mostly use ext4 for filesystems on large partitions (> 1GB), ext2 for small partitions (< 1GB), FAT32 for any partition that Windows/DOS/OSX might need to access.

I might go ahead and try out XFS when I get around to converting my gaming rig over to an LVM setup. I've tried btrfs a couple of times in the past, and it's always been troublesome for me.

jfs/reiserfs here - using both extensively.
Occasionally I make a partition ext3 - for the sake of conformance with other (more restricted) distros.
If I _know_ I'm gonna have some large files, I might use xfs on a parttion (though never rootfs)
Otherwise, a seperate boot-partition will always be ext2, rootfs always jfs/reiserfs - depending upon my mood at the time.
Some rather wellknown distros need to use ext3 since I always install the boot-loader on the rootfs - grub2 doesn't play well with other than ext3/4 in that case.

Seeing I always have 2 or 3 distros on any rig - I usually have a 'master' grub-partition with legacy grub and chainloading to whichever bootloader is on the rootfs on each distro.

Thought I'd jump in on this thread again, still rocking with JFS. My new system sports a 128GB Samsung SSD, I've been trying to figure out the TRIM option (for SSD), but I don't know what kernel actually supports that for JFS. Maybe the next release of Slackware might have the right kernel.

There is a F2FS, but no option to use that for installation, just ext*, Reiser, XFS, JFS, and BTRFS which is still considered experimental so I have no plans on using that indefinitely.
