File manager (super usermode) crashes

Hi, I haven't used this forum for awhile. When I open filemanager -superuser mode I get the dialog box for entering the root password, after I do that file manager opens and then crashes-exits. What's going on? Is there some way to fix this?

It would be usefull to provide some information about:
- Slackwarew version
- Desktop environment (KDE/Gnome/Other(specify)) + version
- Error message
- Which filemanager you are using

It's difficult to say anything usefull about the problem with the information provided.

I'm using slackware 9.0, Kde 3.1 and the application "File Manager-Super user Mode" from the KDE menu (System>More Programs>File Manager-Super User Mode). There are no error messages it just crashes.

What are you trying to do with the filemanager that you can't do with commandline?

I prefer the gui, ok? Anyway file manager-su works in the other distros I use and it did work in slack too. I'm just trying to get it working again. For me sometimes the command line is cumbersome when editing a file for example. I know Icould use vi actually gedit is pretty good but I don't think that works in kde?

Well if you need to run a file or program as root you can do this from a term:

su -c program

that used to happen to me when i used KDE in red hat. i forgot what i guessed might have been the problem, but i think it might have something to do with file ownerships/permissions, e.g., the file manager is opening into a directory that the superuser doesn't own, so it crashes. something like that.

Yes, same thing happened to me in Slack 8.1 and 9.0 - seems to be fixed in 9.1. As I recall, a workaround is to log in to KDE as root, go to Control Center > KDE Components > File Manager > Previews, and uncheck "file" in the list.

Hope it works for you

Thanks!! for the workaround I'll try it and let you know. Is 9.1 significantly better than 9.0? I really like slack. I've been trying to get debian to recognize a nvidia video card to no avail. With slack I just ran nvidia's installer and it worked.

I think Slackware 9.1 is not as stable as Slackware 9.0. I installed 9.1 and had a couple of crashes using KDE. Mozilla didn't work very well (keyboard input was frozen sometimes) . On Slackware 9.0 using same versions of KDE/QT and Mozilla that never happened. Besides that , the kernel headers seems to be broken in Slackware 9.1. I couldn't compile k3b 0.10 and kdemultimedia because of that.

So I reinstalled Slackware 9.0 which is working fine again

I'm not sure I'd say that 9.1 is "significantly" better than 9.0, but it's certainly more stable on my machine, and subjectively at least, seems to run a little faster. I've not had any of rotvogel's problems - K3b compiled and installed just fine, Mozilla runs like a charm (although I'm currently in love with Firebird!), MPlayer is working great - in fact, come to think of it, I've had far fewer software issues on 9.1 than I had with 9.0. Could be that I'm finally emerging from my n00b shell......

As an aside, I've also installed 9.1 on a little Celeron 366 system I put together from second-hand parts (128 mb of RAM, 6.4 gig drive, 8mb ATI graphics), and it runs really well with xfce4 as window manager.

Hey Lim45 Thank you!!!!!!! It worked I did the work around you mentioned and now I have the file manager (su mode) again. Thanks to all the comments on 9.1 also. I think I'll stay with 9.0 for now. Perhaps I learn how to compile my own kernel (there are 2.6 kernels available) I've used several linux distros. SuSE, Knoppix (which is suprisingly good, suprising since it's based on debian and that is one hard distro) Which I use also, when I'm feeling like I want to be tortured. Anyway..I'm liking slack thanks to all!
