i wasn't too happy with nautilus and xfm. i don't use kde. are there any options for a file manager i can use. i don't care if it's not directly associated with some desktop environment. gnome doesn't remember my visual preferences beyond the dir i set it in, so is inconvenient to do over again. i prefer the 'open file' dialog in gedit as a filemanager as opposed to the two i've mentioned.

i don't use file managers , but i heard alot of discussion surrounding midnight commander and gentoo file manager.

I have two suggestion for graphical interface (I have tried a lot):
xnc - mc like file manager
rox - windows like file manager with lot of option (with mount, etc)

I like Midnight commander. THere is also a neat file manager, emelfm.

Very customizable and quick. Also let's you run commands without opening a terminal if you just want to check df or a quick ps.

If your irked about the "spatial" browsing in the new Nautilus like the rest of the free world, you can change that to revert back to it's old behavior.... Just a thought if you use Gnome.

i really like rox. it's a good-looking slim file manager (as opposed to bloated nautilus or konqueror) for x and goes very well w/ a lightweight desktop environment like xfce (but isn't limited to that) ...

emelfm (http://emelfm.sourceforge.net/) was good. nice layout. it seems quite lightweight. good for ppl who don't care much about eye candy. i'd like just a 'wee bit' :P perfect for those really short file management requirements. until i manage to get the terminals on X to look better, i'll use this. has alot of things that can be config-ed. (most of these do)

xnc-X Northern Captain (http://xnc.dubna.su/shots.html) seems good. but needs to be used with the aqua skin to have any visual appeal. i'll be using this for general browsing till i can decide if i like it enough ;-)

worker (http://www.boomerangsworld.de/worker/) is a gory version of emelfm. advantageous if u're running a server where u need to do a lot of maintenance work often since most commands are buttons at the bottom. but then again, if u are running that kinda server, u shouldn't be running X ;-) if it had a built in ftp feature (like filerunner below) then it would be good to do that work on another server.

gentoo (http://www.obsession.se/gentoo/) is a toned down version of worker. has a lot of features/config work so if u spend a lot of time in ur filemanager, go for it. theme-ing it would help (http://www.obsession.se/gentoo/contr...s_Tevessen.gif).

filerunner (http://www.cd.chalmers.se/~hch/filerunner.html) can get boring to look at after a while. but it's got that in-built ftp util i mentioned above.

rox (http://rox.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/) shouldn't be on this list. it's a desktop manager. and i think i'll be installing it

i'm gonna go take a look at the linux choice awards for desktop managers. they should have provided links to homepages and screenshots (in one of the top posts).

Worker can be configured with the buttons at the top. I prefer it to emelfm.
My absolute favorite is X-Files but you need to use Tcl/Tk version 8.3 or earlier for it to work. Another favorite is Tk-Desk but again it doesn't work with the later versions of Tcl/Tk.

Worker has almost the same features as X-Files and those it doesn't have can easily configured (e.g. Ftp, Mail News, Web Browser) by using the configuration menus.

I don't use any of them (none of the ones mentioned
above either ;}), but I think these deserve at least a
mention (if one is into that kind of thing :}) ...

For the last few weeks I have used Rox, but based upon comments in this thread I tried emelfm2 and I must say it fits my temprament well. Thanks for those who suggested it. I also used to use endeavour2 and Gentoo (the file manager) and both are nice. But I stopped using both so I guess that is not the most glowing of endorsements.

What, is CLI out of style? I use nautilus for previewing pictures (i turned off spatial natilus) but for the rest I just use CLI. Its faster, easier (sorting files, directory navigation), uses less resources.

CLI is fine and I like it a great deal. I almost always have at least 2, usually 4-6, aTerms open at any time. But a decent FM can make things simpler upon occasion and requires less typing. As far as resources go, emelf2 requires 2MB and change. Each aTerm requires 1MB, I use transparency. So the resource difference is not high.

By using Gnome, which nautilus implies, you are probably using more RAM starting your WM than I am with a 4 aTerms, FireFox with 11 pages open, a session of emelf2, plus FVWM2. (Current active mem usage with mentioned apps 62760) RAM is cheap, the argument on conserving it does not apply in many cases anymore, especially a modern desktop.

I am a slave to Endeavor Mark II. Whenever I'm not using the command line to work with files, I'm using it. I use it to browse my art collection, primarily.

My vote goes to Xfe.
