File associations in Nautilus
 

I have a basic Slackware 8.1 setup with all upgraded packages installed from the 8.1 Patch directory, and I have installed StarOffice v6. When trying to use the Nautilus file manager to launch a StarOffice file there is no associations listed. When I go into the Gnome Control Center to set up the association nothing appears to be saved, I cannot set up any new associations at all.

I can manually set up the file associations in KDE and add the apps to the menu, but Gnome does not appear to allow me to set this up at all. The program acts like a configuration file is read only and just ignores my entries.

I have tried setting these up under my normal user and when logged in as root, neither appears to work.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.

What version of gnome are you using?

I am using version 1.4, the version that came with Slackware 8.1.

Ok, I have Dropline Gnome installed, next time I start it up I'll have a poke around and see what I can find out.

I just recently installed OpenOffice.org 1.0.3 and have found myself having these same problems with Slack 9.0 and Gnome 2.2.2

I have also tried to setup an association as root and as a regular user. When I look at the association, it looks like it is set up correctly, but when I try to open a OOo file from the Nautilus file manager it tells me that there is no viewer than can open the file.

Also, when I try to use the "open with..." option for the file it doesn't have any options.

I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what the problme might be.

My advise to a slackware user who prefers gnome to kde is to install Dropline-Gnome.
