Is the syntax wrong or is there much to learn about it?
Thanks for any help,

Code:
man ffmpeg
will help a lot.

I happen to just covert a wmv to mpeg-1.

The parameter I used are fairly standard

Code:
ffmpeg -i SOURCE.wmv -target pal-vcd [-pass N] OUTPUT.mpeg
Note the -pass N is for two pass encoding. -pass 1 first then -pass 2. And I include it in the square bracket because it is optional but advisable. If you plan to use it, remove the square bracket please.

As I said earlier, man ffmpeg will help. Though I don't know why you getting Seg Fault.

Try ffmpeg-user mailing list.

If you not already have, build ffmpeg from CVS source. Their releases are very outdated.

I tried the command you suggested but with no success. I tried it with another wmv file and it worked this time.... perhaps the file I want to convert is corrupted? If so how come it is perfectly payed by xine?

Thanks a lot
