I know the situation with multimedia is very tricky regarding non free software, but most of all patents, especially regarding a distribution and company based on the US.
Recently even Debian which supposingly strives for software freedom has made big steps forward by mostly obsoleting its unofficial debian-multimedia repository by moving most of its packages to its official repositories.

Slackware still hasn't really made much progress in this field. It still doesn't include ffmpeg for example which is a swiss army knife when it comes to multimedia handling and is already used by many pieces of software which is part of the distribution including KDE.
A user wanting to take advantage of ffmpeg's unlimited capabilites is forced to recompile the software.

Do you think including ffmpeg in Slackware is an option?

If Slackware included ffmpeg I would probably have to recompile it to support additional codecs anyway so I'm fine with it absent. I already recompile mplayer as it is. Just my opinion, of course.

Simply use the MPlayer and ffmpeg packages provided by AlienBob, he has packages with support for restricted codecs: ftp://ftp.slackware.org.uk/people/al...d_slackbuilds/

You still have to recompile the applications part of Slackware if you install SBO's or alienBOB's ffmpeg.

Have you recompiled eg. k3b with ffmpeg support? Cause i don't see it anywhere.

Sorry, MLED is Xfce-centered and uses a carefully integrated Brasero for burning. Works nice, though.

kikinovak - I just tried mencoder and it was missing loborc-so.xx - I didn't write it down. I had to reinstall the stock MPlayer from 14.0 to sync an avi file. That's the only problem I've encountered so far with your packages.

This is from the orc package. You'll also find it in my repo, in the d/ package group. It's really all meant to be installed together.

Otherwise, check the master MLED.SlackBuild script and the build_order file. Download everything and comment out those packages you don't want to build.

Sinceorc is a dependency for another package, the orc package should be in the "L" series, not the "D" series which in Slackware contains the development tools.

I had a hesitation about this. But since both SBo and Salix put it in D, I followed the convention and did the same. Anyway, my MLED project works a bit like the mother distribution in this respect. Folks are supposed to do either a full install, or at least know what they're doing if they omit something.

I should have realized that from the start. Since I run a full install of Slackware, I removed all the microlinux packages yesterday and replaced them with either a fresh build or from Eric's repo. That's only because I use KDE 99.9% of the time.

The first version of MLED was based on Slackware 13.37 and KDE 4.6.5. I switched to Xfce though, for the main reason that KDE is a fast-moving target. I like Xfce's slow and incremental and somehow more perennial approach.

Regarding multimedia packages: the SBo folks have it quite chewed out for us. Use sbopkg, and it almost feels like the Ubuntu Software Center.
