Fatal server error: no screens found

yes that ole chestnut.
hi folks, hope someone can help.

i have put slackware 11 on an old dell latitude c400 laptop.
startx does not start x.
it says this instead:
Code:

(EE) VESA(0): No matching modes
{EE} Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

the Xorg.0.log contains these lines so i know that the probe has found something useful:
Code:

(--) PCI:*(0:2:0) Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] rev 4, Mem @ 0xe0000000/27, 0xf4f80000/19
(--) PCI: (0:2:1) Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] rev 0, Mem @ 0xd8000000/27, 0xf4f00000/19

i tried X -configure which says:
Code:

(EE) Failed to load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/apm_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "apm" (Loader failed, 7)

It also invites me to test the server by running X with the new config file which has been born in the root directory which i do.
X tries to launch. the little X cursor is there in the middle of a black screen. and then nothing else happens forever.

i really hope someone knows whats going on. i'm kinda interested myself.
thanks in advance.

ps

ps, i haven't really had much call to play around with the x server so this is quite new to me. one thing i have discovered is that the commands *X* and *startx* do not appear to do the same thing.

entering startx -config xorg.conf.new
returns the same as simply entering startx

entering X enters the same as entering startx
but entering X -config xorg.conf.new at least tries to launch the server

anyone help me understand this ?
thanks

Please, take this advise for what it is worth. I had that problem, and I solved it by running xorgsetup.

Hope that works.

Blessed be!
Pappy
