Failed to initialize AGP

Here is my system:
Athlon XP 2600+
512 MB DDR RAM
120 GB HD MAXTOR
GeForce FX 5600

Problem:

When entering the command startx the computer freezes. The installed drivers are the latest from NVIDIA I also tried previous version with the two different files. Didn't work either. The screen display's some green spots on the bottom.
These are the last lines of my XFree.log.0:

(WW) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialeze AGP
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x1024"

The XFree86 config file looks good. I've changed to the correct driver and everything. The option "NvAGP" has been removed, has been set to 1, has been set to 2 and has been set to 3

Nothing helps.

Thankd you for ou're time.

Try to control with:

# lsmod

if agpgart module is loaded

if not you can add the line /sbin/modprobe agpgart into yr /etc/rc.d/rc.local file
Reboot and control again everything!

if agpgart is just loaded... I don't know what causes yr problem!!

thanks

Thanks for you're reaction but lsmod shows agpgart running
the specific line says:

agpgart 39576 0 (unused)

So this is probably good.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that with the same XF86Config file X worked on Gentoo 1.4. But I like slack more. Please help me and don't let me go back to Gentoo. Could it be related to my kernel???

Fixed

my problem has been fixed

i have recompiled the kernel and reinstalled the driver and it work just like that. Very frustrating to know I've been banging my head for day's now on this issue. I didn't really change much in the kernel compilation but it doesn't mather.
