facing serious gtk problems with icon-/image-loading

hi everyone,

i'm running slackware64-current and am confronted with serious icon- and image-loading problems in many gtk-based applications, which i'm unable to solve myself. after 2 weeks of checking, trying, testing i ask for help.

the symptom is simple to describe: lots of gtk-apps are unable to load images and/or icons, where their error-messages are not very meaningful (to me, at least). loading the image/icon result either in a classical "broken image icon" or in no icon/image at all.
i'd also like to mention that it doesn't matter wether the tools are official slackware packages or self-compiled. as well changing the gtk-icon-theme from hires to e.g. tango doesn't help.

some examles:

audacious in gtk-based mode (winamp interface) from repos:
Code:
...
** (audacious:20686): CRITICAL **: skin_draw_pixbuf: assertion `pixmap->pixbuf != NULL' failed
...
the optical result of setting to gtk-interfaces is a plain small white square.

xfce from repos:
no special errors concerning icons.
i see a xfce with empty (means transparent-grey) icons and sometimes the "red X in a white box".

thunar from repos:
Code:
Thunar-ERROR **: Failed to load fallback icon from "/usr/share/pixmaps/Thunar/Thunar-fallback-icon.png" (Unrecognized image file format). Check your installation!
aborting...
Aborted
no optical result at all, thunar doesn't start.

pcmanfm selfcompiled from source:
Code:
** (pcmanfm:20733): DEBUG: unable to load icon media-eject
** (pcmanfm:20733): DEBUG: unable to load icon user-home

(pcmanfm:20733): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
** (pcmanfm:20733): DEBUG: unable to load icon user-trash

(pcmanfm:20733): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
** (pcmanfm:20733): DEBUG: unable to load icon system-software-install

(pcmanfm:20733): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
** (pcmanfm:20733): DEBUG: unable to load icon folder
what i see is a filemanager with icons in the menus but without filetype-icons or sidebar-icons.

other apps like gimp (from repos) or my fluxbox (homebrew) have no problems at all.

i can't absolutely exclude that i simply forgot to install a relevant dependency; but at least i can say that i've been using my tagfiles (which are maintained carefully and with love ) for a loooooooooooong time and never had problems like that. from my point of view all important gtk-packages are installed.

Code:
[ installed ] - gtk+-1.2.10-x86_64-5
[ installed ] - gtk+2-2.24.4-x86_64-1
[uninstalled] - gtkspell-2.0.16-x86_64-1
[ installed ] - pygtk-2.22.0-x86_64-1
Code:
[ installed ] - gdk-pixbuf2-2.23.3-x86_64-1
(i don't list all libIMAGEFORMAT here, they're all there)

plz, give me a hint or a big fat kick into the right direction

Hello,

I've already had headeaches, encountering this. Check if you have shared-mime-info and libgsf installed.

many many thx: shared-mime-info indeed fixed it; libgsf seems not to be necessary.

You're welcome.

If I remember well, libgsf just allows to fix the pcmanfm error. YMMV.
