ext3 = ext2 + journal

it's exactly the same code other than the journalling capacties (which means you don't need to run long winded chceks when the system crashes... not that it ever does of course). THere is a slight procesing overhead associated with the journal, but it's pretty insignificant really.

Journaling File Systems record data transactions that are yet to occur in a--journal. If the system crashes (it happens in Slack once every blue moon) or if my2 1/2 year son hits the reset button while I'm in Slack the filesystem checks the journal at boot-up to see what needs to be written or changed and does it.

If you want to go Journal, try ReiserFS...you'll like it! :D
