I'm running Slackware 10.0 with kernel 2.6.10 on an IBM T23 laptop (P3 1.13GHz, 256MB). I installed Dropline, and it's nice, but it (or parts of it) seem to use all of the available memory on my machine. In Gnome 2.6 (not Dropline), there was about 88MB ram used with no apps open; in Dropline, with no apps open, 234MB ram are used.
These numbers are about the same using the 2.4.x or 2.6.x kernel, as I've tried it both ways (2 completely different installs).
Anyone have any ideas about:
1) WTF is hogging my memory?
2) Anything I can do to change this?

would be a start

Top showed that:
Nautilus was using ~32 MB
Gnome desktop was using ~20MB
each _component_ and _applet_ was using ~20MB.
The clock applet was using 19.5 MB of RAM, which seems a little rediculous.
So I have reinstalled Slack and gone back to plain ol' Gnome 2.6. Not quite as slick, but I get to use my RAM for something besides GUI widgets.

I noticed that DLG was slow on my box (Athlon 2400+ w/ 1GB SDRAM). I couldn't figure it out either. I went to Slack-current with KDE. I was a GNOME-er but after a week I hardly noticed. It's worth a shot. Everything work better and is smoother/faster.
