Excessive disk activity in 12.0

I just got done installing Slackware 12.0 on an old laptop. One thing I've noticed is that the hard drive activity light flashes every second or two, even with no programs running. Does anyone else notice this? How can I find out what is using the disk?

Have you tried lsof - list open files?
If you find out which files are opened/modified, that information should lead you to the program/daemon/process that causes the activity.
