ethernet/dsl/newbie/confused (!dev/eth0)

I just got DSL service. (SBC - the only provider in my area.) I was hoping it would be easy, but I seem to be rather stuck. I hooked up the dsl modem via my ethernet port (Silicon Integratged Systems...) and nothing happened. I have been trying to get it up and running, but am not sure where to start. Even worse, my computer does not seem to recognize my ethernet card. There is not even a dev/eth0.

What to do?

BTW, SBC provides an install cd for windows and mac. It works just fine on my girlfriend's mac. When I ordered the service, they said I should have no problem using it on Linux, but I would not be able to use the provided software. (duh)

try dmesg | grep eth0
then dmesg | grep net and hope there's something about your network card.

Otherwise, lspci and lsmod etc and google a lot.

Once you've got eth0, try dhcpcd eth0, oterhwise manually assign yourself your IP etc. (the ISP should provide your info)

Try ifconfig -=> what is the output -=> try ifconfig eth0 up -=> what is the output? Do you know if you are assigned an IP by dhcp or you have a static IP -=> also do you need to use user name and password? Try hoocking the modem to a windows machine or the Mac and see if the iNEt would work.
