Ethernet bug in Linux 3.8.2 ( maybe in 3.8.x-3.8.2)

Hi,

Created this post to warn anyone attempting to upgrade the kernel to 3.8.2 with a network card of model " Intel Corporation 82579LM". I've upgraded the kernel to 3.8.2 and encountered a silly bug. I cannot connect to internet via ethernet anymore (only if I do a cold reboot with the cable plugged). So, if I hibernate or go into sleep mode and then resume, the ethernet connection cannot be established. Same symptom if I unplug the cable and the replug it.

So, I found this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...x/+bug/1112652

Doing that hack works. The wireless connection is however not affected, it works as before.

There are also wireless bugs that prevent WiFi from working at all. Therefore I'm still using 3.7.10.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have an e1000e card too. Thankfully it's a desktop not a laptop, so I don't as a rule unplug the cable or use suspend so it's not impacting on me.

Unfortunately the 3.7 series is now EOL'd, so if 3.8.3 isn't of decent quality it might be necessary to go back to the 3.4 or even 3.2 series when the next upstream security issue forces people to move on.

Seems fine on slack64-current here. My kernel config is based on Pat's 3.7.1 huge kernel in current.

Code:

Linux fsklab 3.8.2 #1 SMP Mon Mar 4 13:24:21 SAST 2013 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

00:19.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection [8086:1502] (rev 04)
        Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:1494]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 50
        Memory at fe400000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K]
        Memory at fe428000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
        I/O ports at f080 [size=32]
Capabilities: [c8] Power Management version 2
        Capabilities: [d0] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
        Capabilities: [e0] PCI Advanced Features
        Kernel driver in use: e1000e

Perhaps it's actually an ACPI issue?

Maybe it depends on what power management features you've configured in the kernel.

Anyway, Patch here for those who can't wait: https://lkml.org/lkml/2013/1/18/202
( I've not tried it - I can wait ;) )
