eth1 does not work.. shows UP but not RUNNING
 
Hi All,

I have a Dell PowerEdge750 w/ dual onboard Intel Pro NICs. I can't seem to get link on eth1 for the life of me. I've plugged eth1 into various link partners and the link partner always shows link, but mii-tool always shows 'eth1: no link'. eth1 has link light, but software shows no link. I'm using known good ethernet cables, so it's not a physical layer prblm. Here is some more info :

eth1 is plugged into a switch, and the switch shows the link as up, but eth1 shows no link.

try 'alias eth1 e1001' in /etc/modules.conf.

I didn't read the entire post word for word, but from skimming though, I didn't see where you added your eth1 to your route table.

route add -net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth1
Otherwise, Linux will try to send all of the packets out eth0.

Hi, I'm not a network expert but shouldn't the netmask for 1.1.1.20 be 255.0.0.0
The other think ist that I seem to remember that 1.1.1.X is not workinga nd should not be used. Might be that I'm wrong but who knows.

the netmask is a /24, so it should be 255.255.255.0 .. also, 1.1.1.x should work as it works on my other linux machines (FC3) ...

problem solved. wasn't a technical problem... was more of a "i'm a moron" problem.. i have two identical servers racked on top of each other .. the ethernet cable was plugged into the wrong server's eth1 port, lol. it pays to label!

Just because 1.1.1.x works doesn't mean you should use it. It is indeed reserved, see:
http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv4-address-space

In a nutshell:

1.1.1.x is probably working now because it reserved & unassigned, but it is routable & your unauthorized use may already be causing problems to the 'Net. If/when it ever gets assigned in the future then that may cause you problems, suddenly & unexpectedly, perhaps in the middle of the night or on a weekend, holiday, or vacation. In would be a good idea to switch now to 1 of the 3 private spaces.

BTW, 1 of the reasons that you aren't getting complaints now may be that firewalls near you are automatically blocking this address as a part of a reserved block. People I know who try to write anally comprehensive fw scripts, block everything on the IANA reserved list.
