eth0 up, but cannot ping modem

hey people, here.s my problem.

I re-installed slackware 10.0, formatted the HD before that, and I was configuring everything, but now there.s a problem with my network. I cannot ping my external modem/router (the GATEWAY)
Unfortunately I can't post outputs because I can.t use the internet either, but I try to be as accurate as possible...

in the rc.inet1.conf I.ve set IPADDR and NETMASK and GATEWAY (the modem) correctly. consequently rc.inet1 loads ifconfig properly. Network is functioning, I can ping myself, and I can ping the ethernet card. the output of ifconfig looks normal, as well as the output of route -n. But I can.t ping the modem/router! ping 10.0.0.138 gives: destination unreachable. consequently I cannot connect to anything on the internet.

and then this: before I re-installed I was running the same kernel 2.6.9. I just copied it and re-installed it. it has all the networking stuff compiled in. before the reinstall everything was working without any problems. and now this happens.

Any ideas what this could be? The most likely problem is that the cables are not connected, but they are. the card also shows the green light, just as the modem/router.

cheers

ps, I also tried to recompile a new kernel. so I built a 2.4 kernel, because I didn.t have the source of the 2.6 kernel. but the same results so I installed the 2.6.9 kernel again...

Are you sure that the options in rc.inet1.conf are correct? At first glance my thought would be that the netmask is set incorrectly (i.e. you machine thinks it's on a different network from the router, so it tries to send packets to the GATEWAY, which also appears to be on a different network, so ir responds and tells you it can't find the destination).

Out of curiosity, does your modem/router have DHCP capability? Is there a reason that you need to set a static IP for your machine? Have you tried DHCP?

never mind. fixed it. for some odd reason the IP of the modem/router was 10.0.0.2, but I am 100% sure it used to be 10.0.0.138... well I can use the internet again...
