I need help, I downloaded OpenOffice from the Open Office website, the tar extraction went fine but when I run the RPM file "rpm -Uvih *rpm" I get error:
==============================================================================
error: Failed dependencies:
/bin/sh is needed by openoffice.org-core10-2.0.3-7
libgnomevfs-2.so.0 is needed by openoffice.org-gnome-integration-2.0.3-7
libgconf-2.so.4 is needed by openoffice.org-gnome-integration-2.0.3-7

You know, it's not overly bad to compile either.. Takes forever and a day on an old system but works good. The only problem I had when I built it was I had no help files... I like abiword better anyway so I uninstalled it. OOO is too bloated for my tastes/needs.
I found the install package from linuxpackages for OpenOffice 2.0.3, I d/l'ed it and ran "tar xvzf <the file name>", it unpacked a lot of stuff, is there something else that I am supposed to do?
The package you get from linuxpackages.net (or any package for that matter) should be installed with installpkg.
Code:
installpkg <packagename>.tgz
You can man installpkg for extra options if you wish. Run as root of course. That should get you going.
Ironically, OpenOffice is the only package that I won't compile and install myself. I'm sure I'll come across another at some point but OpenOffice is one of those ridiculously time-consuming installs that I just don't wish to deal with.
I really wish people would stop suggesting the use of rpm on Slackware...
Bad, marnold, Bad!!!
I know (I think) that you're joking, but I didn't suggest using it. I was just telling him how he could get the RPMs to install. One of the chief reasons I'm using Slackware is so that I don't have to deal with RPMs. I like OOo and use it almost every day, but the RPM packaging thing has to be the Worst Decision Ever.
Having said that, if there was no unofficial Slackware package for it, I would use the RPMs. I simply don't have the time or the patience to compile that whole beast.
