It'd be better to try and figure out why you can't run SlackBuilds then trying to fix the mess of using packages from various people on pkgs.net.

Sorry, my own mistake, I had misunderstood what I was supposed to do, and ended up putting the contents of the tarball into that directory instead of the tarball itself - serves me right for not paying better attention

If you haven't already, take a look at SBo's HOWTO. It gives basic instructions on how to use the site and the files obtained from there

Now that you figured out the issue with the SlackBuild error, have you tried recompiling it?
