Erratic sounds in Slack 9.1

I am using Slackware 9.1 and have OSS configured for my sound as ALSA didnt want to work. When I boot into KDE I have no volume so I have to run rexima or kmix to turn the sound up. I turn it up and the console noise works like if you have an error, it doesn't always work with Enemy Territory or GLTron. I don't get it and also like if I play ET and the sound does work afterwards the sound doesnt work for anything else and I checked rexmia and the sounds are still up? What could it be?

Did you try disabling the arts soundserver on KDE startup? I had similar problems but that fixed it for me. Of course then you won't have that silly startup sound from KDE!

Use the 'Control Center' app, go to Sound & Multimedia/Sound System and unclick the arts sound startup.
