Enlightenment on slack

I was curious if there is some technical reason why pat doesn't include enlightenment in the xap. Licensing or something?

I'm started getting bored of fluxbox and needed a change to something a little bit more configurable. I tried fvwm which is very configurable but doesn't feel very interactive. I even got a really nice them based on Ikaro and Taviso themes. The thumbnail feature is really cool, but that is about it. Even with the visually appealing theme it still felt outdated and I didn't really like it otherwise.

I was going to hack fluxbox to get the thumbnail feature, but that was a little more work than I felt like doing and decided it was time for a change.

I tried enlightenment for the first time today, and seems like a very modern window manager. I believe it is based off of fvwm. Even has the cool thumbnail feature that goes into a little panel so there is no taskbar which will fit well into my overall plan and ideas of what I want my final desktop to look like. Funny becuase when I was going to hack fluxbox this was exactly how I was going to do it. It also has a very small footprint and is responsive. I was just wondering if there is some technical reason why pat doesn't include it. It only took me 5 minutes to compile so it's not exactly a gnome or kde type of thing.

I wouldn't say E has a small footprint.
I used it for years and sometimes found it a bit slow and resource hungry
(Though not a KDE or Gnome though).

Have you tried Windowmaker? That's a nice one, small, fast, pretty and very easy to configure and create menus especially.
Though it doesn't have a pager, which is it's only failing for me.

Slackware used to include Enlightenment, I think it was there up to Slack 7.

Pat dropped it because of conflicting libraries if memory serves me. I think it had something to do with imlib.

Fluxbox put me at 88 MB total. Enlightement puts me at 89 MB total. For me if I can boot the kernel, start X11 w/ full acceleration, and load the window manager in anything under 100 MB is acceptable for me.

Perhaps they lightened it up and optimized it since you last used it becuase it seems pretty zippy on my box, more so than fvwm.

Yeah I've tried Windowmaker, it is not quite what I'm looking for. I seem to like enlightenment so far but the only thing is it doesn't seem very configurable. I would like to increase the resolution of the iconbox snapshots and I can't find any setting to do this. I'm thinking about just hacking the source code and recompiling as doing that would be easy compared to building an iconbox feature into fluxbox.

My end goal is to make my gui similiar to Mac OS X tiger or panther. Not the theme so much just the feel and general look. If apple released OS X for x86 I'd be the first person on line to buy it and I'd be running a dual boot OS X/slackware.

Apple's X11 is already ported to x86 :

I would not recommand it though, see:
http://opendarwin.org/en/faq/ch01.html#who_would_use

As a note, the mac OSX main GUI is not provided by X11 but by Apple's Aqua/Quartz interface

OS X is not ported to x86 just a few driver were. Barely enough to get it to run and only on very specific machines. It is far from being ported.

I'm a aware of that. I know OS X architecture pretty well. I think it is a beautifull architecture and that is why I'd be the first in line.

enlightenment(16) is for sure not ressource hungry, i have it running on a gentoo system, after bootup only 27mb ram are used.

Well after two days of playing with enlightenment I find it one of the most unconfigurable window managers I've ever used in my life.

I'm going back to fvwm and will fix the things I don't like about it since it is so damn configurable. I was hoping to avoid reading all that documentation as there are so many modules and options.

This is slightly off topic but don't you guys think that pat should include OpenBox? Might as well, got plenty of space since gnome is gone..

slakmagik 03-30-2005 05:54 AM

Because fluxbox and blackbox aren't enough *boxes? :p He should include ice. ;)

I think fvwm is probably the most hard-core choice.
apart from twm of course!
;)

Yes but damn that thing is configurable. It will take some work but you can pretty much make it do and look like anything. I've seen some screenshots that are beyond belief. I've have downloaded 7 themes from net that I really like and will filter through them and customize my own.

bigearsbilly 03-30-2005 07:24 AM

I agree.
I've been meaning to get round to learning
fvwm myself.

you been here?
lots of fvwm stuff.

there's a forum too http://fvwm.lair.be/

(but you probably know all this!)
