Enabling Microphone for Skype
So after I got skype up, everything worked great, until I made a call and my voice doesn't record. My webcam even works but of course voice doesn't.

So turns out it was disabled, but after I enabled it all I hear is a bunch of static.
Code:
bash-4.1$ arecord -l
**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC259 Analog [ALC259 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
When I do areplay test.wav and play it using aplay test.wav all I get is static.

There was a recent thread that also reported a problem with the internal microphone with the ALC259. I do not know whether the problem was resolved.

Did you make sure to set your microphone correctly under skype options? I always have to do this since skype for some reason sets my soundcard as a mic.

I found that if I use dmix as suggested by Alien Bob, for boosting alsa audio volume in my notebook, mic in skype stops to work. reverting to basic configuration fixed this issue for me.

In my case I had to use the following ~/.asoundrc to fix the channels for recording:
Code:
pcm.convert_mic {
type route
slave {
pcm "plughw:0"
channels 2
}
ttable {
0 {
1 1.0
1 1.0
}
}
}
pcm.swmixer {
type dmix
ipc_key 1234
slave {
pcm "hw:0,0"
period_time 0
period_size 1024
buffer_size 4096
rate 44100
}
}
pcm.!default {
type asym
playback {
pcm "swmixer"
}
capture {
pcm "convert_mic"
}
}

You can create it if it doesn't exist, or use /etc/asound.conf for global configuration. I don't know if it will help you, my card is one of those that need this fix.

That directory isn't there either..

You mean the file, right? You surely must have /etc, and ~ is your home directory.
As I said, only some Intel HDA chips require this, but I'm not sure about yours. If it doesn't work, you can delete the file you've created.
