enabling aRts for specific user

In trying to sort out another problem I've managed to disable sound on one specific user - I use kde.

Whilst logging on to that user it stated it had a problem with /tmp/mcop-alex - permissions were wrong.
It also asked me something like "do I want to disable aRts for this user" - foolishly I answered yes!

I now want to turn aRts back on for this user - how?

Thanks

I don't remember where exactly is the option, but you can do that on the Control Panel (or how it's called..). Look for Sound or Multimedia or something like that, there was a checkbox to enable/disable arts.

Thanks for the reply.

Seemingly the checkbox is "Control Centre" > "Sound & Multimedia" > "Sound System" > "Enable the sound system"

On all the users including the one with no sound this checkbox had an 'X' in it.

So for the offending user I unchecked it and the sound appeared. Saved the settings. Then checked it to bring it in line with the other users and test the sound I then get an artsmessage box with -

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Device or resource busy)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

which at the moment means nothing to me.

Uncheck the checkbox save the settings and I get sound again! Weird!!

Any pointers as to where to look?

In the end I used my normal backstop for these weird kde problems by deleting the .kde folder recyclling the user and going through the kde wizard.

Seems to clear most known ills!
