Enable Modem and NIC on Laptop

Over a year ago there was a post in the Slackware forum about how to have both a modem and a NIC working on a laptop without running netconfig everytime you go out on assignment.

I am installing Slack 10. My NIC is a Realtek 8139too setup for DHCP and I can setup my smartlink modem

Anyone remember this post or can walk me through it? My LinuxQuestion searches only go back to mid 2003 and google searchs with slackware + modem + nic produce an overwhelming number of hits.

About the only advice I can give is to whittle down the number of hits on google by adding 'site:www.linuxquestions.org' to your search terms.
