Emacs does not start

I have a clean 12.1 Slackware install, but emacs refuses to start. The error is: Undefined color: "black". Do you know what can be the reason?

I don't have a direct answer, but I tried Googling

emacs "Undefined color"

and got about 730 hits ... it looks like this has popped up from time to time on other distros ...
