ejabberd? Something Else?

I'm in the process of installing Evergreen library software which includes a requirement (or perhaps a suggestion) to install ejabberd.

Process One (http://www.process-one.net/en/ejabberd/) the appears to be the official site for ejabberd, which is available as a binary installer or as source code for configure-make-make install.

I'm wondering if ejabberd is the best bet or if there is some alternative (such as those at SlackBuilds.org, particularly gajim). Evergreen talks exclusively about ejabberd (which might just make ejabberd the "best" choice) although I must note that I'm totally a novice when it comes to XMPP application servers and have no idea what works and what doesn't.

I figure I can build from source with src2pkg or just install the binary, don't know which is better (although the Slackware package route has the most appeal).

Thanks for any advice.

I use OpenFire. It's easy to set up and administrate.

Yep, another vote for OpenFire. I looked around for a jabber server, and that's the one that kept popping up. If you use it, be sure to read ALL of the documentation and even web sites with undocumented behaviors. I got caught up in an issue where my passwords wouldn't work. I even reset them in the sql database (I learned a lot about MySQL that day). It's a common enough issue that other people had figured it out, it's just a pain. Good luck.

Ejabberd is a requirement for Evergreen. It is used for communication within OpenSRF, and is not optional.

Like I said in the other thread, Evergreen is not the easiest system to install on slackware.

Oh, yeah, I'm learning that -- step by step, not too bad, SlackBuilds.org and src2pkg come in handy and keeping track of what I'm doing does too.

Seems like installing the ejabberd binary is going to be the easiest (although building it from source might be, uh, "fun," too -- or not).
