I recently changed my isp from a local service to earthlink and now I am having the worst of times :^) Well, I was wondering if there is a tutorial that is slackware specific for setting up my connection with earthlink. With the standard DHCP setup I lose connection all the time, I may lose it after I type the request :^) I've ran the pppoe-setup script and put it the info as best I can, but still no joy, I keep getting an error, something like "@C...1/>2,null". Any help would be appreciated.
I successfully used Slackware with Earthlink DSL for many years. I used a variety of wired and wireless routers that managed the PPPOE connection for me. It should be a very simple thing for you to set up.
All I had to do was to point my browser at the router's configuration page (for example http://192.168.0.1), enter the connection parameters, Earthlink user ID, Earthlink password, etc. Note: for PPPOE, Earthlink requires that you enter your full user id, for example, "yourname@mindspring.com", not just "yourname".
Then my Slackware system would connect to the router and get a port assigned with DHCP, no problems. The router did all the worrying about the PPPOE details.
So, I guess the first question would be, what kind of equipment do you have between the DSL line and your computer?
Thank you for responding David, I am using the ZyXel, P-600 series router/modem for my earthlink connection. I've gone to the configuration page and set my parameters there (the ones received from earthlink with my windows-xp os installed), and ,yes, I am using DHCP, but I having a heck of time keeping my connection. Sometimes, I can browse for a while and at others I can't leave the first link, again, thanks for the assistance, and if you have any more ideas please let me know, because I hate the idea of using Windows until I change my ISP. Happy Slacking.
Okay, so you can get a connection, and you can browse for a while, then you lose it.
Here's something that's easy to try. Put a DSL microfilter on *every single device* that connects to your phone line. Maybe something like a wireless telephone base station is generating high frequency noise that interferes with your DSL, causing the modem to occasionally lose sync. If that's the problem, microfilters can help. Also see if you can correlate your connection losses with things like the phone ringing or somebody picking up a wireless handset.
The 'ZyXel, P-600 series router/modem' allows you to 'nail' the IP for the modem. If you are indeed loosing the lease for the modem I would set the 'nail' option. The filters could be a problem but I suspect a 'lease' issue. Especially if it is recurring on a timed basis.
Thanks guys, I pointed my browser to the earthlink config page and entered the configs including the nail-up connection and I seem to remain connected now, problem solved, thanks guys.
