Do "lspci -v" for more info.

mr_mandrill 08-29-2002 11:23 AM

this is the output from lspci -v
As far as I can see the hollywood plus isn't clashing with anything.....?

Aussie 08-29-2002 06:46 PM

It's not sharing an IRQ with a PCI device but it still might be sharing with a system device, check your ide conrtrollers, etc..

mr_mandrill 08-30-2002 05:42 AM

How do I do that?

Aussie 08-30-2002 06:22 AM

In the kde control center under Information-->Interrupts.
Or do "cat /proc/interrupts"

mr_mandrill 08-30-2002 03:46 PM

This evening I've opened the box up and removed a PCI modem..

This is now my PCI config followed by the system interupts..

can't see anything clashing...

Aussie 08-30-2002 07:24 PM

That looks ok, are you still getting the time outs?

mr_mandrill 08-31-2002 04:55 AM

Yeah, still getting the timeouts...

Am completely stuck....

Aussie 08-31-2002 05:12 AM

Have you tried the cvs version?

mr_mandrill 08-31-2002 06:41 AM

Nope, am not entirely sure how to use cvs... or actually what exactly it is... would a cvs build be newer but poteintially unstable?

mr_mandrill 08-31-2002 06:51 AM

Also would there be any permission or user problems... I'm installing this as root.. currently I'm downloading stuff in windows (fat) as I haven't set up the adsl connection under slack... so then I'm copying the tar.gz to /usr/src extracting and making...

Hmm actually when the window partition is mounted all the permissions are very strict... regular users can do next to nothing...

Previously I would use root for everything (really bad i know).. As this machine is now a gateway for a home lan, and house mates will use this machine... I'm trying to do everything right.. Although I'm still not very good at knowing when i should/shouldn't be root...

Aussie 08-31-2002 07:04 AM

Did you chmod the em8300 devices?

mr_mandrill 08-31-2002 09:24 AM

what permissions does they need?

Aussie 08-31-2002 09:53 AM

Ok this is what i have mine set to,
Code:

bern@grendel bern$ ll /dev/em8300*
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root    root          13 Aug 22 20:58 /dev/em8300 -> /dev/em8300-0
crw-rw-rw-    1 root    root    121,  0 Aug 22 20:58 /dev/em8300-0
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root    root          16 Aug 22 20:58 /dev/em8300_ma -> /dev/em8300_ma-0
crw-rw-rw-    1 root    root    121,  2 Aug 22 20:58 /dev/em8300_ma-0
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root    root          16 Aug 22 20:58 /dev/em8300_mv -> /dev/em8300_mv-0
crw-rw-rw-    1 root    root    121,  1 Aug 22 20:58 /dev/em8300_mv-0
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root    root          16 Aug 22 20:58 /dev/em8300_sp -> /dev/em8300_sp-0
crw-rw-rw-    1 root    root    121,  3 Aug 22 20:58 /dev/em8300_sp-0
bern@grendel bern$

And this is what i have in /etc/modules.conf
Code:

alias char-major-121 em8300
pre-install em8300 modprobe adv717x
post-install em8300 em8300init
options adv717x pixelport_16bit=0 pixelport_other_pal=0 swap_redblue_pal=0
options em8300 dicom_fix=1 dicom_control=1 dicom_other_pal=0

"chmod 666" will set the correct permissions and you'll need to play around with the module options to get the tv out working correctly.

mr_mandrill 08-31-2002 10:20 AM

This probably doesn't below in this thread but i'll ask the question anyway...

As I mentioned before I'm having difficulty working out when i need to be root and when not...

Is it the case that all things compiled from source need to be done so as root?
