Question Dual Monitor, Dual Adapter

OK, here is the deal. I have 2 identical LCDs attached to 2 separate GPUs. One is an HD6950, the other is the integrated Intel GMA x4500. Now my Bios allows dual a dual setup (and I actually have it working well in win7), but how do I get it working in X? The "System Settings" in KDE do not recognize the system as dual-display. It does boot and display the console on the IGD display, but then X loads and runs on the Radeon only. Switching to the console displays on the IGD again. Is it possible to run both?

In windows, it is pretty sweet because the tasks running on each display utilize separate GPUs. Example, when editing with Vegas, I can pre-render and edit on my Radeon (OpenCL enhanced) and view the preview on my IGD display (does 1080p nicely).

Thanks.

Should be straightforward with an appropriate /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (or more correctly these days, suitable files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/). The Gentoo wiki would be a good place to start. http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org...Graphics_Cards

Ok, so that was a bit of help. But now I've actually moved backwards. I still only have one monitor functioning in X, however I also lost resolution/resize control and Desktop Effects. Thoughts?

Code:
root@wopr:/etc/X11# cat xorg.conf

From what I can tell, it knows there should be two displays present, it is loading both drivers, but it is failing to bring the Intel display up.

Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "RightCard"
        Driver "intel"
        BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
        Screen 1
EndSection
I think that should also be 'Screen 0' as your integrated Intel graphics likely provides only one output.

You will not able to have 3D acceleration when using xinerama. You also will not be able to get 3D acceleration on the intel GPU when using separate screens if you are using the AMD proprietary driver on the AMD GPU. The only way to get 3D acceleration (and I don't even know if this will work as I've never tried it myself) would be to use separate screens with the open source drivers on each GPU.

What you are doing is the computing equivilent of saying "I've got a 5.7L V8 car and a mower, its great, I can get the V8 car to carry my food back from the shops while the mower carries my letters'.

GMA x4500 is so weak compared to the HD6950 (or even far cheaper and slower video cards) that it would be just as fast given a 2nd fairly weak task. I'd just use the HD6950.

You are missing the point. If I can do it in Windows, I should be able to do it in Linux, riiiiiiiight? My system is setup to Dual boot. I've been messing with this for a while (obviously) And heck, the way it is now, I can play Crysis 3 on the one GPU while I stream netflix, or monitor my performance, or watch my inbox, or whatever on the second GPU with a minimal cost to overhead. Besides that I only have two LCD D-Sub monitors and I'd like to have the dual displays working for added productivity. Here is what I have so far.

I've tried a little tweaking here and there, but it won't fire up both displays. I can comment out one or the other and get the respective one working, but not both at the same time. I have the 13.4 AMD driver installed right now. I've tried writing config files from scratch and I get the "screen 1 deleted because of no matching config section" error in those and it unloads the intel driver. At least with this one, both drivers stay loaded and it is correctly detecting the Monitors. Unfortunately nothing gets displayed on them. It seems like I am soooooooo close to getting it working.

First off, just because it is supported in Windows does not mean it should necessarily work in Linux.

Second, you are much more likely to get it working if you do not use the proprietary driver for the radeon GPU. That driver replaces parts of the driver stack used by the open source drivers.

Third, the Xorg modesetting driver is only really recommended for a few GPUs, and they don't include yours. If you insist on proceeding with this setup, I suggest switching back to the Intel driver for that GPU and showing us the Xorg log file that is generated.

Finally, try without Xinerama enabled first. As I said above, using Xinerama will disable all acceleration.

Note that I can comment out Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0" and change the line above it to specify either Screen0 or Screen1 and it will run properly on the respective display. When I remove the comment and try to run it as you see here, I get 2 blank screens and the attached logfile.

Besides that I only have two LCD D-Sub monitors and I'd like to have the dual displays working for added productivity. Here is what I have so far.
Have you even tried using just the HD6950 in windows?

Netflix doesnt use that much GPU power, and its quite likely that running both monitors from the HD 6950 will be just as fast as running 1 x VGA from the 6950 and 1 x VGA from the intel onboard video. It might even be faster, the intel 'GPU' is mostly CPU driven...

As far as linux goes, I would NOT use this intel + AMD setup. You'll have to use the open source ATI/AMD drivers, so you'll be cutting performance and increasing the HD6950 heat output and power consumption.
