Dual Booting Mandrake and Slackware.

Hi all,

First, I'm a relatively new Linux user (Mandrake).

I have a machine which is set us as follows:

Windows XP on the primary master HDD - C:
Data space on D:
Windows 2K on E:

Mandrake 9.2 on the primary slave HDD in a 5 Gig logical partition followed by 25 Gigs of free unassigned space.

I am using Lilo installed in the MBR of the Primary master.

I have read a lot about Slackware and have downloaded 9.1 and burned the .iso to a CD, ready to go.

My questions are:

How do I install Slackware into some of the free space I have after Mandrake on my Slave HDD?

Do I partition the space beforehand or do it through the Slackware install process?

How will the bootloader issue resolve itself? Will Slackware overwrite the Mandrake Lilo and allow both versions of Linux to be booted as well as Windows? or

Should I install the Slackware bootloader onto a floppy and leave the existing Lilo in peace?

Thanks.

"Do I partition the space beforehand or do it through the Slackware install process?"

You partition the space beforehand. I prefer to do this with fdisk.

"How will the bootloader issue resolve itself?"

You should install the Slackware bootloader onto a floppy and then edit the /etc/lilo.conf file in Mandrake to include Slackware as a third option.

Re: Partition-ok
Re: Slack bootloader: Will Slack give me the option of installing the loader to a floppy at the appropriate point during installation? Mandrake 8.0 gave the option but the downloaded version of MDK 9.2 just went ahead and installed Lilo in the MBR.

Thanks again!

I last installed Slackware about 6 months ago and as I remember it I was able to create a boot floppy and not install a Slackware bootloader on the MBR. You can protect yourself from the MBR being destroyed during the install by creating a Mandrake boot floppy. Then you can still get into Mandrake with the boot floppy. Also, the Slackware install CD has a rescue function. You can use the rescue function to repair any Linux system or boot into Slackware, and maybe boot into Mandrake. The last Mandrake install I did, Mandrake did not have a rescue function on their install CD.

OK.

Thanks for your help, and quick response!

I almost have the same problem. I want to install Slackware but I don't know what to do in my boot loader. I already installed it to the MBR and I would like to know what to do so I can get all my operating systems to be recognized.

Here is a thread that explains how to do it:
